PT Pertamina EP Tanjung Field Invites the Community to Maintain the Safety and Security of Oil and Gas Pipeline Routes

PT Pertamina EP Tanjung Field Invites the Community to Maintain the Safety and Security of Oil and Gas Pipeline Routes

Penajam– PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tanjung Field reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national oil and gas energy security through an Outreach Program on Oil and Gas Pipeline Safety and Security for communities around the waters of Penajam Paser Utara (PPU). The session was held on 4 November 2025 as part of an upstream oil and gas safety campaign aimed at strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration in protecting oil and gas pipelines as national vital objects (obvitnas).

The session covered safety aspects related to the 16-inch pipeline right-of-way (ROW) and subsea pipeline routes. Communities living around the ROW are prohibited from building structures or residing in the area to ensure their safety and maintain safe upstream oil and gas operations.

The outreach was attended by the Penajam Subdistrict Head, Penajam Police Chief, representatives from the Water Police Unit (Polair) of PPU Police Resort, the Naval Post, village heads from Pejala, Saloloang, Sesumpu, Tanjung Tengah, and Kampung Baru, as well as representatives of fishermen from the five villages.

Rozihan Asward, Head of the PPU Fisheries Office, stressed the importance of awareness and cooperation from all parties in maintaining the security of oil and gas pipelines. “Oil and gas infrastructure must be understood as a national vital object that requires collective protection for the safety and security of communities and the environment,” he said in his opening remarks.

Separately, PEP Tanjung Field Manager, Charlie Parmonangan Nainggolan, underscored the Company’s commitment to safety and sustainable operations. “We believe that managing safety and human health, as well as protecting the environment, is fundamental to carrying out all upstream oil and gas operations and ensuring the continuity of the Company’s oil and gas production, which is essential for national energy security,” he said.

During the technical session, Aipda Mahfirman from the Water Police Unit of PPU Police Resort explained the roles of each party in safeguarding pipeline routes. He noted that the government is responsible for regulating, supervising, and enforcing rules related to pipeline security. Companies or operators are directly responsible for operating, maintaining, and securing the pipeline. “Workers share responsibility for operating and maintaining the system, while communities can play a role by observing and reporting potential threats or damage to the pipeline,” he explained.

Representing HSSE PEP Tanjung Field, Irzak Huda delivered a technical presentation on potential hazards along oil and gas transportation pipelines. “Leaks can occur due to internal pressure from pumping systems. External pressure, such as friction from rocks or heavy equipment, as well as landslides or sudden ground movement, can cause deformation or displacement of underground pipelines,” Irzak said while responding to questions from fishermen’s representatives.

Through this outreach, PEP Tanjung Field reinforced its commitment to safe, compliant, and community and environment focused oil and gas operations. “The Company hopes that strong collaboration with local government, security forces, communities, and SKK Migas will enhance the monitoring of national vital facilities and maintain the continuity of energy supply for Indonesia,” Irzak added.

At the recent Executive Meeting of SKK Migas Kalimantan and Sulawesi Representative Office, PPU Regent Mudyat Noor reaffirmed support for strengthening the monitoring of oil and gas pipelines. “We all have a role in jointly protecting national vital objects to ensure they remain safe and undisturbed. The well-being of communities living around these areas must also be properly considered.” His remarks underscored the importance of synergy among the government, companies, and communities in maintaining operational continuity and national energy security, in line with the Government of Indonesia’s Asta Cita agenda for energy self-sufficiency.
