Commemorating World Environment Day with Junior High School Students, PT Pertamina EP Bunyu Supports Environmental Literacy Among Bunyus Young Generation

Bunyu Island, North Borneo – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field collaborated with SMP Negeri 2 on Bunyu Island in an environmental education and tree-planting activity. The event, which took place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, was attended by 28 students and 3 teachers who received presentations on the impact of waste on the environment, the importance of implementing the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) principles, and the strategic role of mangrove ecosystems in maintaining the balance of coastal environments. The activity was organized to commemorate World Environment Day 2026, which carries the theme #NowforClimate – Time to Act for the Climate.

The activity also served as a platform to enhance students’ ecological awareness (eco-literacy). Participants were encouraged to understand the importance of sorting and managing waste from its source, rather than simply disposing of it. This educational initiative is expected to reduce the volume of waste ending up at the Bunyu Island landfill by using organic waste as compost and recycling inorganic waste, such as plastics. In addition to waste management, mangrove conservation was a primary focus of the activity. For the Company, sustainable mangrove ecosystems represent critical natural green infrastructure that protects coastal operational facilities from abrasion while functioning as natural carbon sinks (blue carbon). For the younger generation, mangroves can serve as a natural laboratory to foster ecological awareness while creating opportunities for environmentally based creative economic activities in the future.

In his remarks, Acting Senior Manager of Bunyu Field, Riza Akbar, stated that the activity represents one of the Company’s tangible efforts to support environmental preservation while strengthening the implementation of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) pillar and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program within upstream oil and gas operations. “This activity demonstrates that PEP Bunyu’s commitment extends beyond energy security to environmental sustainability, particularly in areas surrounding our operational region,” he explained.

With the spirit of #NowforClimate – Time to Act for the Climate, the Company and educational institutions continue to encourage the emergence of an environmentally conscious generation in order to realize a green, clean, and sustainable Bunyu Island for the future. “This activity is expected to shape the younger generation into agents of change who bring positive environmental practices into their homes and surrounding communities,” he added.

During the educational session, the Company presented various initiatives and commitments undertaken to support environmental preservation through waste management and mangrove conservation programs on Bunyu Island. Interactive discussions engaged students in sharing their perspectives and ideas on environmental conservation efforts that can be implemented from an early age. Participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm through a range of questions and ideas related to waste management, reforestation, and coastal environmental protection. Following the session, all participants took part in a tree-planting activity within the school environment as a form of collective commitment to preserving the environment and creating long-term benefits for the people of Bunyu Island.

The principal of SMPN 02 Bunyu, Muhammad Nakir, expressed appreciation for the established collaboration. “We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Company for the collaboration in commemorating World Environment Day at our school,” he said.

According to him, through this educational and tree-planting activity, students not only gained knowledge about the importance of environmental preservation but also became directly involved in tangible environmental conservation efforts. “We hope this strong synergy can continue in shaping an environmentally conscious and well-rounded generation,” he concluded.
