Supporting National Energy Availability and Security, PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia Exceeds Oil and Gas Production Targets in the First Quarter of 2026

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) recorded positive performance in the First Quarter of 2026 by successfully exceeding its oil and natural gas production targets. As of the end of March 2026, through its subsidiaries and affiliates in the Kalimantan region, PHI was able to produce 60.44 thousand barrels of oil per day (mbopd) and 619 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd), equivalent to approximately 120 percent and 105 percent of this year’s production targets.

In addition to achieving excellent oil and gas production performance, the Company maintained safety performance with zero fatalities, 57.36 million safe working hours, and zero Lost Time Incidents (zero LTIs).

PHI President Director, Sunaryanto, explained that this performance achievement reflects the Company’s commitment to continuously delivering sustainable oil and gas production, particularly in the Kalimantan region, to support national energy availability and security in accordance with the Company’s vision and mission.

“At PHI, we continue to invest in exploration and exploitation activities to ensure the sustainability of the Company’s oil and gas production, which is important in supporting the achievement of national production targets and Indonesia’s energy security,” he stated.

According to Anto, Sunaryanto's nickname, the Company’s success in promoting innovation and facility reliability has become one of the key factors in increasing production.

“The implementation of innovation and technology is the Company’s strategic measure in restraining the rate of production decline, increasing the recovery rate, and maintaining the production levels of mature oil and gas fields in the Kalimantan region,” Anto explained.

Furthermore, he revealed that the Company also carried out maintenance, repair, and well reactivation activities in order to increase productivity and extend the lifespan of wells and oil and gas fields.

“Thanks to innovation, cross-functional collaboration, and the synergies established, the Company’s key projects within the 2026 work plan have been able to achieve the expected results,” he added.

One of the innovations implemented by PHI’s subsidiary is the application of the High Pour Point Oil (HPPO) method at the Handil Field, managed by PHI subsidiary PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), as well as at the Mutiara Field and Pamaguan Field, managed by another PHI subsidiary, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS). The method addresses the challenge posed by oil with high paraffin content and a pour point above the pipeline's operating temperature. The use of specialized solvents keeps the oil in liquid form (preventing solidification), allowing the production flow to continue optimally and sustainably. In addition, another technological breakthrough at PHM optimized production from emulsion wells at the Tunu Field.

On the other hand, PHSS implemented the Permanent Coiled Tubing Gas Lift (PCTGL) innovation in workover wells at the Louise, Samboja, and Mutiara Fields. Gas lift technology involves injecting pressurized gas into the well tubing to help oil rise more easily to the surface. This innovation successfully increased well productivity and helped achieve production targets in the First Quarter of 2026. The acceleration in recorded oil production was also contributed to by PHI subsidiary PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT) from the Kerindingan and Sapi Fields, as well as by new infill wells offshore East Kalimantan.

Efforts to maintain and increase production are carried out not only through the implementation of innovation and technology but also through maintenance, repair, and well reactivation. At PHM, for example, the Handil Rejuvenation Program at the Handil Field successfully increased production by 5% compared to before its implementation.

Meanwhile, the achievement of gas production targets was supported by the successful onstream commissioning of the second and third platforms of the Sisi Nubi AOI Project, managed by PHM, at the end of February and March 2026, respectively. Positive contributions to gas production were also supported by the smooth implementation of well service activities at the Tunu Field (PHM), workover wells at the Santan Field (PHKT), and the Nilam and Mutiara Fields (PHSS).

Anto expressed his gratitude to all workers and stakeholders, including the government and communities in the Company’s operational areas in Kalimantan.

“The support of all internal and external stakeholders for the smooth operation of the Company’s upstream oil and gas operations constitutes an important aspect in maintaining sustainable oil and gas production, which is essential for national energy security in line with the Asta Cita of the Government of Indonesia,” he concluded.
