Supporting Earths Sustainability, PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Shares Success Story of Mangrove Rehabilitation in the Mahakam Delta

Samarinda – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) participated as one of the speakers in the “Sharing Experiences in Mangrove Rehabilitation in East Kalimantan” Forum organized by the East Kalimantan Provincial Forestry Service in Samarinda on October 8, 2025. The participation reflected the regional government’s recognition of PHM’s contribution and success in collaborative, community-based environmental management through mangrove planting and rehabilitation programs along the coastal area of the Mahakam Delta, East Kalimantan.

The forum aimed to support the action plan of the East Kalimantan Regional Mangrove Working Group/Kelompok Kerja Mangrove Daerah (KKMD) and to strengthen the integration of coastal ecosystem-based programs within regional sectoral and spatial policies. The event was attended by representatives from the Nusantara Capital Authority/Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara (OIKN), various Regional Government Agencies/Organisasi Perangkat Daerah (OPDs), including the Forest Management Unit/Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan Produksi (KPHP) and the Environmental Agency/Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (DLH) at both provincial and district levels, as well as academics and environmental communities.

During the forum, PHM shared experiences and best practices under the theme “Efforts and Challenges in Mangrove Protection and Rehabilitation.” The presentation highlighted PHM’s comprehensive approach to preserving mangrove ecosystems through collaboration with stakeholders and the empowerment of coastal communities, particularly in the Mahakam Delta.

Head of Communication, Relations & CID PHM, Achmad Krisna Hadiyanto, stated that the mangrove planting and rehabilitation program reflects the Company’s strong commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “PHM is committed to continuously delivering real, positive contributions to environmental preservation and the well-being of coastal communities. This aligns with the Company’s aspiration to grow sustainably alongside the environment and society,” he said. The mangrove rehabilitation program supports several SDGs, notably Goals 13 (Climate Action), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 15 (Life on Land).

Achmad added that between 2023 and 2024, PHM successfully planted more than 600,000 trees, including mangroves, endemic Kalimantan species, and fruit trees around its operating areas. “The Company’s Environmental CSR programs have effectively supported government initiatives to preserve the environment around our operational areas. This success cannot be separated from strong collaboration with various stakeholders, including local governments, NGOs, and Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes), from planning to implementation,” he concluded.

Over the past few years, PHM has carried out a series of mangrove planting and rehabilitation programs across its operational areas, including at the North Processing Unit (NPU) and South Processing Unit (SPU). These initiatives are implemented in collaboration with Pertamina Foundation through the Blue Carbon Initiative and through PHM’s own CSR programs. In addition, PHM has fulfilled its watershed/Daerah Aliran Sungai (DAS) rehabilitation obligations as part of the Company’s environmental sustainability commitment.

These programs have generated significant impacts across various aspects. In terms of education and knowledge sharing, the initiative has served as an environmental learning platform for local students and communities. By integrating mangrove-related materials into school curricula, students actively participate in learning and planting activities, becoming early agents of environmental change. The program also represents the Company’s sharing of core competencies to raise awareness and build capacity for coastal conservation.

From an economic and gender perspective, the program fosters collaboration among regional and national stakeholders, strengthening synergy among government, industry, and local communities to sustain mangrove ecosystems that play a crucial role in climate change mitigation and coastal protection. The program also promotes gender equality by involving more than seven women from vulnerable groups in mangrove seedling and planting activities. It has created new employment opportunities and increased local income by empowering BUMDesa Karya Sepatin, which serves as the program’s implementation coordinator.

The environmental impact has also been tangible. The program contributes to coastal abrasion mitigation, strengthens coastal ecosystems, and supports carbon emission reduction through mangrove vegetation carbon sequestration.
