Supporting Coastal Ecosystem Conservation, PT Pertamina EP Sangatta Field Holds Environmental Action in Teluk Lombok, East Kutai

East Kutai – As the highlight of the 2025 World Environment Day commemoration, PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangatta Field carried out a coastal clean-up and mangrove planting in the coastal area of Teluk Lombok, Sangkima Village, South Sangatta District, East Kutai Regency, at the end of July. The initiative demonstrated the Company’s commitment to preserving coastal ecosystems while raising public awareness on the importance of environmental conservation. This year’s program was held under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

The activity was a collaborative effort involving the East Kutai Environmental Agency (DLH), Kutai National Park Authority (BTNK), East Kutai Police, Indonesian Army and Navy, Sangkima Village Government, and community service students from Universitas Mulawarman.

The coastal clean-up covered Teluk Lombok’s shoreline, where participants collected and sorted waste into categories such as plastic and glass, gathering 20 bags in total—equivalent to 77 kilograms. Before the clean-up, participants planted 100 mangrove seedlings of the Avicennia species, known for their role in protecting shorelines from abrasion, controlling floods, providing marine habitats, and absorbing carbon.

Cahyo Nugroho, Sangatta Field Manager, emphasized the Company’s commitment to safe upstream oil and gas operations while contributing to community empowerment and environmental conservation. He encouraged all stakeholders to sustain coastal preservation efforts. “Through this program, we hope the presence of PEP Sangatta Field can bring benefits to the community and inspire greater environmental awareness for the future of our next generations,” he stated, while appreciating the strong enthusiasm and collaboration shown by participants.

Acting Head of East Kutai Environmental Agency, Dewi, commended PEP Sangatta Field’s direct contribution to sustainable environmental management. “We hope this initiative can be expanded beyond Teluk Lombok to other coastal areas,” she said.

Dony Indrawan, Manager of Communication Relations & CID at PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), explained that coastal ecosystem conservation is part of PHI’s environmental and social responsibility, carried out with its subsidiaries and affiliates across Kalimantan. “We are committed to implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through Community Involvement & Development (CID) programs that support local economic development, community empowerment, and environmental sustainability, such as the coastal clean-up and mangrove planting by PEP Sangatta Field in Teluk Lombok,” he said.

He added that the Company’s CID programs in the environmental sector have supported the conservation of proboscis monkeys, Irrawaddy dolphins, orangutans, and other wildlife, while restoring ecosystems around operational areas through the planting of tens of thousands of mangrove, pine, fruit, and endemic trees in Kalimantan.

This coastal ecosystem preservation initiative also aligns with government programs on waste reduction and management, as well as carbon emission reduction toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier. “Through collaboration with stakeholders, this program is expected to serve as a tangible example that brings positive impact for environmental sustainability and coastal community welfare,” he concluded.
