Kutai Kartanegara – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) continues to support the sustainability of the Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program, a flagship CSR initiative that provides access to quality education for children living in coastal areas around the Mahakam Delta, categorized as underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions/Tertinggal, Terdepan, dan Terluar (3T areas). The program is implemented at SMPN 6 Anggana, located in Sepatin Village, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Recently, the Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program received international recognition at the 18th Annual Global CSR & ESG Summit & Awards 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, held on April 23–24, 2026, earning Platinum recognition in the Excellence in the Provision of Literacy & Education Award category.
SMPN 6 Anggana is located within the ring 1 operational area of PHM’s South Processing Unit (SPU) and is the only junior high school in Sepatin Village, established in 2012. The community commonly refers to it as the “floating junior high school” due to its location at the edge of the Mahakam Delta, directly facing the tidal dynamics of the Makassar Strait. Access to Sepatin Village is also challenging. From Samarinda City, for instance, the journey must be made by river transport on the Mahakam River in a small boat for approximately 80 kilometers, taking around three hours depending on tidal conditions.
This year, PHM provided support for the construction of a school gate and a learning park, which were officially handed over by the management of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia, PHM’s parent company, during a visit to the program site on April 28, 2026. The visit was part of the Company’s commitment to ensuring the effectiveness of CSR program implementation through regular monitoring and evaluation (monev) activities. During the visit, PHI management also conducted mangrove planting activities involving students, teachers, and local community members as part of efforts to preserve coastal ecosystems.
Senior Manager of Relations at PHI, Handri Ramdhani, explained that the monitoring and evaluation activities aim to directly review the implementation of CSR programs, meet beneficiaries, identify areas that are progressing well, and collaboratively address challenges encountered in the field. Through the Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program, PHI seeks to expand access to education, improve educational quality, encourage the spirit of edupreneurship, and foster awareness among coastal youth of the importance of pursuing higher education.
Handri expressed appreciation for the progress in educational facilities at the coastal school, including the availability of laptops, solar-powered electricity, and internet access. "We highly appreciate the dedication of teachers who continue teaching in remote areas. To the students, make the best use of this learning opportunity as a form of appreciation for the teachers’ dedication and hard work,” he stated.
According to him, the program was designed to strengthen access to education in the waters and coastal areas of the Mahakam Delta by providing learning facilities, developing teachers' competency, and establishing an educational ecosystem in the region. Initially launched in 2022 under the name “Sekolah Rawa Hutan,” the program evolved into “Sekolah Negeri Terapung” in 2024 following the strengthening of its concept and expansion of its impact. Entering its fourth year of implementation, the program has now moved into its second development phase, which includes the socialization of the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Program (P5), education on the dangers of Narcotics, Psychotropics, and Addictive Substances (NAPZA), regeneration of student-based teacher motivators, internship and knowledge transfer programs for coastal graduates, development of locally based curricula, and scholarship assistance for coastal university students.
The principal of SMPN 6 Anggana, Tandarman, revealed that all program assistance has been successfully implemented and has provided tangible benefits for the school. “We have been greatly supported because we cannot rely solely on village funding,” he said. Despite various limitations, Tandarman continues to encourage teachers and students to achieve Excellence. In 2022, these efforts led the school to receive district-level Adiwiyata School recognition. Tandarman believes that the achievement was largely supported by the active involvement of young teachers who consistently participated in the Company’s capacity-building programs.
According to Tandarman, the CSR program has also opened broader opportunities for educators at the school. One teacher, Nurul Fitriana, was awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching Program for International Teachers from the United States Government in 2025. She had the opportunity to participate in professional training, development programs, and cultural exchange activities for one semester at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. According to Nurul, the knowledge she gained during the program will be implemented in teaching processes and curriculum development. “This achievement would not have been possible without the support and guidance from PHM throughout the application and selection process,” she explained.
Nurul hopes that her achievement can inspire her students to continue their education. According to her, education is one of the pathways to creating opportunities for success. “Deep in my heart, I hope that one day there will be students from SMPN 6 Anggana who aspire to become teachers and help develop Sepatin Village into a better, safer, and more comfortable place for our students to learn and grow,” she expressed hopefully.
Despite limited facilities, students of SMPN 6 Anggana have achieved extraordinary accomplishments in international painting and drawing competitions. The artwork of Ainun Nisa, a seventh-grade student, won a nature-themed drawing competition organized by the Wildlife Foundation as part of the Tushar Non-Less and Nature for All initiative. Her work was selected for exhibition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in October 2025 after competing against participants from various countries. Another student, Idul, achieved first place as Indonesia’s representative in the Fish Art Contest organized by Wildlife Forever United States in 2023.
During the visit to Sekolah Negeri Terapung, PHI Manager Communication Relations & CID, Dony Indrawan, served as a speaker in the Inspirational Class session. In front of the students, he emphasized the importance of discipline and consistency in achieving one’s dreams. According to him, success is not merely a matter of luck, but the result of strong commitment and consistent effort.
Dony also reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to continuously implementing CSR programs in the education sector. “At PHI, we believe that education is one of the main foundations for building an independent and knowledgeable society, as well as creating a better future for the next generation,” he concluded.
