North Kalimantan – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) management conducted a visit to the locations of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs in its operational areas in North Kalimantan from September 14 to 19, 2025. This visit was part of the company’s regular monitoring and evaluation activities to ensure the success, sustainability, outcomes, and positive impact of CSR programs for beneficiary communities.
The visit was led by Sr. Manager Relations of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) Handri Ramdhani and involved the management team from the Communication Relations & CID (CRC) Function at PHI’s head office in Jakarta, as well as the Head of CRC for Zona 8, Zona 9, and Zona 10, and CSR program officers from these three zonas.
During the visit, PHI management had the opportunity to engage in discussions with local heroes, beneficiaries, and local government officials at several CSR program sites, including the Hydroponic Green Village Program and the Turtle Conservation Program located on Bunyu Island. The team also visited the “Aliansi Kerja Bebas Sampah (Akar Basah)” program in Nunukan Regency and the “Kelompok Usaha Bersama Disabilitas Batik (Kubedistik)” program, which has become a batik icon in Tarakan City, North Kalimantan.
Handri explained that this visit served as a platform for company management to ensure CSR activities were implemented as planned, identify challenges faced by programs, assess program performance and mentoring activities, and obtain feedback and input as a basis for accurate decision-making for future improvements, ensuring programs become more effective, efficient, and impactful. “This visit reflects our commitment to ensuring that the company’s upstream oil and gas operations and business activities support economic growth, community independence, and environmental sustainability through CSR programs aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
According to Handri, the company remains committed to implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as part of its application of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) and Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
On Bunyu Island, PHI through PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field runs the Hydroponic Green Village Program, which began as an initiative to reduce carbon emissions from burning red ferns considered weeds in the area. The innovation of using red fern roots as hydroponic growing media offers a solution for environmental conservation while creating opportunities for developing hydroponic agriculture on the island.
During the discussion with the Head of Bunyu Barat Village, representatives from the Bunyu Subdistrict government, and three women farmer groups from Bunyu Barat, Bunyu Timur, and Bunyu Selatan Villages, Dony Indrawan, Manager of Communication Relations & CID PHI, expressed his appreciation for the progress of hydroponic farming in these villages. “The growth of hydroponic farming in Bunyu, producing vegetables and fruits, particularly melons, shows the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in implementing the company’s CSR programs to ensure their development and sustainability,” Dony said. The women farmer groups supported by the program have successfully developed derivative products from melons, such as dodol and ice cream.
Dony noted that when local governments provide full support, as demonstrated by the Head of Bunyu Barat Village, company CSR programs can reach a wider group of beneficiaries. Compared to 2022, we see significant progress in 2025 in the number of women farmer groups and community members benefiting from the program. Today, the program has become a reference for the village government in expanding new beneficiaries on Bunyu Island,” he said.
Yuli Hayati, S.Sos, representing the Acting Subdistrict Head of Bunyu, expressed hope that similar activities would continue in the future through collaboration and synergy to develop Bunyu Island together. “This program must have continuity, with ongoing review and supervision, because the objectives of CID programs are truly noble,” she stated.
The Head of Bunyu Barat Village, Suhadi, added, “The CID program is real proof that initiatives starting from small assisted partners can grow and benefit the wider community.”
During this visit, PHI and PEP Bunyu Field agreed to collaborate with local fishing groups, as well as Bunyu village and subdistrict governments, to initiate a turtle conservation program at Nibung Beach. This is an initial step toward preserving turtle populations and developing a tourism village on Bunyu Island.
