Nunukan – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tarakan Field carried out an Environmental-Based Empowerment Program for Marginal Groups through a two-day Seaweed Processing and Entrepreneurship Training at the Class IIB Nunukan Correctional Facility Hall, North Kalimantan, on September 26–27, 2025. The activity is part of a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) between PEP Tarakan Field and Class IIB Nunukan Correctional Facility, aimed at supporting capacity building and economic independence for correctional residents.
The training was attended by the Head of Guidance, Education, and Work Activities (Kasi Binadik dan Giatja) of Class IIB Nunukan Correctional Facility, Eko Novyanto, and the Head of South Nunukan Subdistrict, Ramsidah, who both appreciated the collaborative initiative. A total of 20 participants took part in the training, which covered entrepreneurship materials and practical sessions on processing seaweed into dodol (a sweet confection) and amplang (a fish cracker).
Nunukan, located in the northernmost part of North Kalimantan Province, is categorized as a 3T area (frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped). Nunukan Port also serves as a cross-border port connecting Indonesia and Tawau, Malaysia.
Head of Communication Relations & CID Zona 10, Dharma Saputra, stated that the company supports human resource and MSME capacity development through various CSR programs in the economic and environmental sectors. He added that the company continues to collaborate with local governments and relevant stakeholders in community development around its operational areas. “We hope that this entrepreneurship and seaweed processing training can enhance participants’ capacity in improving product value by developing derivative seaweed-based products,” said Dharma.
Meanwhile, Eko Novyanto, Head of Guidance, Education, and Work Activities at Class IIB Nunukan Correctional Facility, said the training supports inmates’ readiness to reintegrate into society. “We are optimistic that after this training, participants will be able to produce amplang and seaweed dodol products that can later be marketed at the SAE Lanuka Tourism Gallery, an Assimilation and Education Facility owned by Class IIB Nunukan Correctional Facility,” he said.
In a separate statement, Dony Indrawan, Manager of Communication Relations & CID of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), emphasized the company’s commitment to continuing the implementation of innovative and sustainable CSR programs as an important step in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Through this training program, we aim to contribute to SDG Goal No. 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth. We also support the government’s programs in improving productivity, income, and community independence through entrepreneurship-based activities and institutional strengthening of local community groups,” said Dony.
To maximize the benefits and positive impact of its CSR programs, Dony added, the company continues to replicate and expand successful initiatives across other communities and operational areas. “CSR programs create a greater impact when developed and replicated to reach more beneficiaries,” he explained.
Aligned with government policies and programs, PHI and its subsidiaries and affiliates in Kalimantan continue to promote CSR initiatives that enhance economic growth and community independence. “We believe that empowered and self-reliant communities, along with a sustainable environment, will support the continuity of the company’s oil and gas operations and production for decades to come. This creates mutual benefits and shared value for both the company and the community,” he concluded.
