Promoting Circular Economy in Anggana District, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga Facilitates the Development of an Integrated Farming System for Women Farmers Group

Kutai Kartanegara – PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS) held a training session on replicating integrated farming systems based on maggot cultivation and biofloc catfish farming for Women Farmers Groups (KWT) in Anggana District, Kutai Kartanegara. The training was part of PHSS’s community involvement and development program called SI TERANG, short for Sinergi Pertanian Organik, Budidaya Maggot dan Peternakan Kecamatan Anggana (Organic Farming Synergy, Maggot Cultivation, and Animal Husbandry in Anggana District). Entering its fifth year in 2025, the program continues to empower local communities through sustainable initiatives. The session took place on September 2, 2025, at Rumah Maggot Anggana, Sungai Mariam Village, and was attended by 70 participants.

The participants came from seven women's farmers' groups, including KWT Berseri, KWT Rumpun Cemara, KWT Anggrek Jaya, KWT Sri Rejeki, KWT Cendana Makmur, KWT Mawaddah, and KWT Tanjung Flamboyan. The event was conducted in collaboration with Rumah Maggot Anggana (RMA) and attended by Wahyu (Acting Head of Sungai Mariam Village, Heni (Agricultural Extension Center (BPP) staff member, Sujatmiko Ariwibowo (RMA Chairperson), and Nanang (Biofloc Catfish Cultivation Practitioner).

Dony Indrawan, Manager of Communication Relations & CID at PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), stated that the Company is committed to implementing its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through Community Involvement & Development (CID) programs that support local economic growth, self-reliance, and environmental preservation. “We believe that involving communities in the implementation of the Company’s social and environmental responsibility programs is a strategic step to ensure their effectiveness, positive impact, and sustainability,” he said.

According to Dony, the SI TERANG Program, initiated by PHSS, has demonstrated that innovation in organic waste management can be effectively integrated with community economic empowerment efforts, particularly for vulnerable groups, such as women in rural villages. “Through this program, we encourage the replication of integrated farming systems based on maggot and biofloc catfish cultivation involving women farmers. This initiative is expected to empower vulnerable groups and serve as a model for applying circular economy principles in the Company’s sustainable CID.

With a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders, including farmers’ groups, local governments, and field practitioners, this program is expected to continue developing into a sustainable model that can be replicated in other villages within the Company’s operational areas.

The training began with registration and a pre-test to measure participants’ initial understanding, followed by opening remarks from Company representatives and the Acting Head of Sungai Mariam Village, representing the Head of Anggana District. The first session was delivered by the Chairperson of Rumah Maggot Anggana, who discussed the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots as a solution for uncollected household organic waste in Anggana, which reaches around 45.3 percent. Through a demonstration using the Mago Box, participants were introduced to a simple circular economy concept that produces alternative feed for livestock and fish.

The second session featured an aquaculture practitioner who explained the biofloc concept, including medium preparation using salt and probiotics, and demonstrated the use of a catfish seeder and an aerator. Participants also had the opportunity to practice assembling biofloc ponds, providing important technical experience for developing independent farming ventures. The training became increasingly interactive with technical Q&A sessions, post-training evaluations through post-tests, and quiz sessions for participants.

Through this program, PHSS promotes multi-stakeholder synergy between communities, government, academia, and the private sector to realize a village-based circular economy model. This aligns with the need to provide more economical and sustainable feed alternatives while addressing household organic waste management challenges.

Training participants expressed their appreciation to the Company for organizing the event. Agricultural Extension Center staff in Anggana District, Heni, said, “Thank you to PHSS for organizing today’s maggot-based catfish cultivation training. Hopefully, it will continue to be successful, and the Women Farmers Groups in Anggana District will continue to grow and prosper.”

Chairperson of Rumah Maggot Anggana, Sujatmiko Ariwibowo, also expressed his appreciation to PHSS for conducting the training on waste management and maggot processing into fish feed. “I hope that this activity will continue and inspire other Women Farmers Groups,” he said.

Elizabeth Novi, Chairperson of KWT Tanjung Flamboyan, also shared the benefits of the program for addressing family food needs. “This activity is very beneficial for us, housewives who are members of the Women Farmers Group. Hopefully, in the future, this initiative can help us achieve food self-sufficiency for our families, especially for the Women Farmers Groups,” she said. Similarly, biofloc cultivation practitioner Nanang added, “I hope this activity will be useful for the Women Farmers Groups and that, going forward, they can become independent in running maggot and biofloc catfish cultivation.”
