Jakarta, May 28, 2025 — PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) through Regional 3 Kalimantan, together with Sinopec Energy Investment (HK) Holdings Limited, officially signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to conduct a study on the development of Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) technology in the Tanjung Field. The signing took place on the 15th floor of the PHE Tower in Jakarta.
This collaboration aims to optimize the potential of oil and gas fields by applying CEOR technology, which is considered effective in increasing production from mature fields. The Tanjung Field itself is one of the strategic assets managed by Regional 3 Kalimantan. Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) is an advanced method for increasing oil recovery by injecting specialized chemicals into the reservoir. This technology works by reducing the interfacial tension between oil and water, thereby increasing oil mobility and allowing more oil to flow into production wells. This method has proven effective, especially in fields that have experienced a significant decline in production.
Rachmat Hidajat, Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development at PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, expressed his appreciation for this collaboration. "We are very enthusiastic to start collaborating with Sinopec. This marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance national oil and gas production through the application of EOR technology. We are confident that this agreement marks the start of a partnership that will benefit both parties," said Rachmat. He also emphasized the importance of efficiency and innovation in addressing industry challenges, especially amid fluctuations in global oil prices.
VP Development and Drilling Regional 3 expressed the same thing, Reza Rinaldi Zein, who considered this collaboration as a form of trust and a reflection of the increasingly strong relationship between the two parties. "This collaboration reflects a shared spirit in developing the potential of the Tanjung Field sustainably. We hope that the implementation of CEOR can make a real contribution to increasing national production," he explained.
From Sinopec, Zhao Xuan, Sr. Executive Vice President of Sinopec International Energy Investment (HK), expressed his optimism about the future of this collaboration. "The signing of the JSA is an important milestone in the partnership between Sinopec and Pertamina. We greatly appreciate the openness of the Pertamina team in exploring new approaches and innovative business models for the success of this project," he said.
The event was also attended by several stakeholders from both parties, including Toriq Abdat (VP of Upstream Business Development), Giyatno (Senior Manager of Subsurface Development PHE), Julfrinson Sinaga (General Manager of Zona 9), and Qin Shenggao, Country Manager of Sinopec.
The signing of the JSA marks the beginning of the joint technical study phase, which will evaluate the feasibility of implementing CEOR technology in the Tanjung Field, South Kalimantan. This initiative stems from PHE's strategy to support the achievement of the government's planned production targets of 1 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 12 billion cubic feet of gas per day (BSCFD) by 2030. Mature fields, such as Tanjung, have great potential for redevelopment through advanced technologies like CEOR, which are expected to increase recovery factors and reduce dependence on new wells.
With this strategic collaboration, PHE continues to demonstrate its commitment not only to maintaining production amid technical and economic challenges but also to encouraging innovation for national energy independence and the sustainability of Indonesia's upstream oil and gas industry.
