Tanjung Selor– To welcome Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2023, Pertamina EP (PEP) Tarakan Field, in collaboration with the North Kalimantan Provincial Government Forestry Service (Kaltara), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Increasing Biodiversity in the Tarakan Protected Forest Area (20 /05/2023). This MOU is part of the company's commitment to CSR programs in the environmental sector.
As a follow-up to the signing of this MOU, PEP Tarakan Field and the Provincial Government of North Kalimantan inaugurated the Gunung Selatan tourism object in the form of planting endemic Kalimantan trees in Tarakan City, North Kalimantan, on May 25, 2023.
Manager of PEP Tarakan Field Isrianto Kurniawan said that the inauguration and planting at Gunung Selatan was the company's initial form of collaboration with the North Kalimantan Government in increasing biodiversity conservation.
”We continue to support the preservation of biodiversity in Tarakan City and North Kalimantan. Planting 50 therapeutic seeds (Artocarpus Odoratissimus) and 100 damar seeds (Agathis Borneensis) is a form of the company's commitment to preserving the environment in the company's operating areas. Both of these endemic plants are endangered or near threatened and critically endangered," said Isrianto.
According to Isrianto, the company applies social and environmental innovation in its CSR program to have a significant and sustainable impact on society.
"The inauguration of the Gunung Selatan tourism object as a center for research and development of environmentally sound education with ecotourism potential, such as the development of kelulut honey cultivation and education of endemic Kalimantan plants, can have an impact on increasing the community's economy," he explained.
Meanwhile, the Governor of North Kalimantan, Zainal A. Paliwang, expressed his appreciation to all parties collaborating to realize Gunung Selatan's ecotourism. "We hope that this Gunung Selatan tourism object can positively impact both environmental sustainability and improve the community's economy," concluded Zainal.
