PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Wins Two Awards for Circular Economy and Sustainable Development

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia's subsidiary, PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), has achieved success at the 2025 Circular Economy & Sustainability Awards (CESA), winning two awards in the Energy Efficiency Program category. Thanks to the success of the company's two CSR programs, PHM earned Platinum honors for its Waste to Energy for Community (Wasteco) program and Gold honors for its Independent Energy Village (DEB) Mahakam program.

The awards ceremony took place at the Bidakara Building in Jakarta on Friday, July 18, 2025. The CESA is the first awards program initiated by the Corporate Forum for CSR Development (CFCD) to recognize businesses and institutions deemed successful in implementing circular economy practices and sustainable development in their business activities.

Frans Alexander A. Hukom, Head of Communication Relations & CID PHM, explained that these two programs demonstrate PHM's commitment to supporting upstream oil and gas operations based on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, and directly contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Addressing Climate Change).

The Wasteco program is a community development program based on renewable energy (EBT) that utilizes methane gas from organic waste processing at the Manggar Final Waste Disposal Site (TPAS) in Manggar Village, Balikpapan City. This program directly benefits 1,520 residents or 380 families around the Manggar TPAS.

The Wasteco program has successfully increased the productivity and welfare of the community, particularly women, through the utilization of six oil and gas technologies. The program has received intellectual property rights (IPR) and patent recognition as the first and largest program in Indonesia for methane gas capture and distribution.

Meanwhile, through the Mahakam Energy Self-Reliance Village Program, since 2021, PHM has installed 282 Solar Home Systems (SHS) and three Solar Power Plants (PLTS), providing electricity access to communities in four remote coastal villages/sub-districts accessible only by water. This clean energy initiative contributes to the energy transition and improves the community's quality of life in education, the economy, and the environment.

Dony Indrawan, PHI's Communication Relations & CID Manager, expressed PHI's commitment as the parent company to continuously promote the implementation of innovative, impactful, and sustainable CSR programs within the company. "We are committed to implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that supports community development and environmental preservation in line with efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," he said.

According to Dony, the success of the Wasteco and DEB Mahakam programs demonstrates the company's success in developing programs based on local potential and involving stakeholders, such as the community and local government, to create impact and benefits that can be enjoyed by all. "We believe that empowered and independent communities, along with a sustainable environment, will ensure the sustainability of the Company's upstream oil and gas operations and business now and in the future," he concluded.
