PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Holds a Series of Environmental Actions in All Oil And Gas Fields in East Kalimantan.

Balikpapan– In commemoration of World Environment Day/Hari Lingkungan Hidup (HLH), PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) held a series of environmental actions across its upstream oil and gas operations in East Kalimantan from May 19 to June 30, 2025. This year's commemoration carried the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution."

PHM's various environmental actions included talk shows, housekeeping competitions in the workplace, community service, beach cleanups, and tree planting. PHM General Manager Setyo Sapto Edi stated that the series of environmental actions was part of PHM's commitment to continue conducting its upstream oil and gas operations and business based on sustainable principles. "PHM has implemented various initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote energy efficiency, and manage waste, including plastic waste, within the Company's work environment," Setyo said.

PHM's efforts align with the Indonesian government's targets stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 97 of 2017, namely a 30 percent waste reduction and 70 percent waste management by 2025. "PHM believes that real action starts with small but consistent steps, especially in the workplace," said Setyo.

To commemorate this year, PHM held a talk show titled "Journey to Zero Waste: Lessons from Home & Community" at the Balikpapan Base Office (BBO) on June 16, 2025. This event featured two inspiring speakers from environmental practitioners and entrepreneurs: Novia Arifin, an educational content creator on social media through the account @ceritanupi, and Dianisa Ester, Chief Operating Officer of the Balikpapan-based startup Cirowaste.

The event was held as a hybrid program. It was attended by PHM employees, representatives of local environmentally conscious communities in Balikpapan, such as the Manggar Waste Bank, the Balikpapan Green City Main Waste Bank, and the Graha Indah Mangrove Center, as well as student representatives from Balikpapan University and the Kalimantan Institute of Technology.

The two speakers provided perspectives on practical waste management practices and shared their experiences in implementing a zero-waste lifestyle and the circular economy concept, which connects the community with waste banks. Their presence is expected to raise awareness about the impacts of daily consumption and encourage behavioral change, especially among PHM employees.

Meanwhile, PHM HSSE Operations Manager, Yudi Pantja Putera, stated that the Environment Day 2025 commemoration event represents a concrete manifestation of the company's contribution to environmental conservation. "With this environmental action movement in commemoration of Environment Day 2025, we hope it serves as a reminder to all of us that the plastic pollution crisis requires a real contribution from all elements of society, including PHM," Yudi said.

In this environmental action, PHM employees engaged in decluttering, collecting unused and still usable items to exchange for other needed items. PHM also held an X-Banner Design Competition and a Video Competition as a pre-event for 2025 Environment Day, which will serve as the closing event for the Environment Day 2025 initiation at PHM.

A series of environmental actions held at PHM's oil and gas fields includes:

  • SPS Field: A beach cleanup in Teluk Pemedas Village, with residents of RT 6 and RT 7, collected 590 kg of waste. Currently, the SPS Field is also preparing to launch the SPS Bank Entity Recycle (BERES) program, a collaboration with the Clean Muara Jawa Movement to support waste control and management in the Muara Jawa District.
  • Bekapai Field: Two housekeeping sessions were conducted, collecting a total of 43 kg of waste.
  • HCA Field: A community service activity with residents of the Muara Jawa District, holding a domestic waste management workshop involving the community surrounding the operational area, with representatives from the Clean Muara Jawa Movement and the Muara Jawa Ulu Village Head as speakers.
  • CPU Field: Organized a shoreline cleaning that collected 109 kg of waste and a plastic waste utilization workshop with speakers from the Anggrek Hitam Community for Small and Medium Enterprises (UKM3R).
  • SPU Field: Planted 10 tabebuya tree seedlings around the operational area.
  • NPU Field: Held a month-long housekeeping competition, including tidying and decorating the work area based on the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and participated in by all field entities.
  • POMA Field: Clean-up of the work environment, collecting a total of 161 kg of waste.

PHM believes that continuous efforts to build collective awareness among companies, the government, and the community regarding waste management, especially plastic, will drive significant steps and results for environmental conservation now and in the future.
