From Oil and Gas Field to Kalimantan Forest, Pertamina Board of Commissioners Reviews PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga Operation Area

Mutiara, East Kalimantan – The Board of Commissioners of PT Pertamina (Persero) conducted a working visit to the operational area of one of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia's (PHI) subsidiaries, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), which manages the Sanga Sanga Working Area in East Kalimantan. Led by Deputy President Commissioner Todotua Pasaribu, the group visited the Mutiara Central Plant (MCP) operational facilities, engaged in dialogue with workers, and inspected the location of a CSR program for orangutan conservation on July 24.

Also present during the visit were Commissioner Nanik S. Deyang, Independent Commissioners Condro Kirono and Raden Adjeng Sondaryani, PT Pertamina (Persero) Risk Management Director Ahmad Siddik Badruddin, and the board of directors of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi.

On this occasion, PHSS management, led by Director Sunaryanto and Zona 9 GM Julfrinson Alfredo Sinaga, outlined positive performance, demonstrating the upward trend in oil and gas production since the beginning of the year. As of June 2025, PHSS recorded production of 93.11 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of natural gas and 12,752 barrels per day (bpd) of oil. PHSS management also outlined various technical challenges in managing mature fields and operational dynamics in the field.

Responding to the presentation, Deputy President Commissioner Todotua Pasaribu emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing the dynamics of the oil and gas industry. "Coordination and synergy are key to overcoming the challenges we face, we can find the best solutions together." he said.

Beyond technical upstream oil and gas operations, the Board of Commissioners also reviewed the orangutan conservation CSR program implemented by Zona 9 through PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tanjung, PEP Sangasanga, and PEP Sangatta, in collaboration with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF). This program includes the adoption of three orangutans and the planting of 2,600 trees since 2024. This program demonstrates the Company's commitment to supporting ecosystem preservation and biodiversity conservation around its operational areas. This step also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 15, which aims to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

In her remarks, Commissioner Nanik S. Deyang expressed her appreciation for the collaboration between the Company and BOSF in caring for, training, and releasing orangutans back into their natural habitat. These efforts are crucial for the conservation of endemic species and are a concrete step in maintaining ecosystem balance. "I truly appreciate the extraordinary work of PEP Tanjung, PEP Sangasanga, and PEP Sangatta, with BOSF, which focuses not only on caring for orangutans but also on continuously developing sustainable conservation programs," said Nanik.

In addition to Pertamina's Zona 9 Upstream Subholding, BOSF also collaborates with other Pertamina Group entities within Zona 8. Nanik hopes that support for BOSF can be expanded to other entities within the Pertamina Group. Broader synergy is crucial to ensure the positive impacts of conservation programs are felt more evenly and sustainably.

Regarding the orangutan release program, Nanik emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring. She noted that most of the orangutans in BOSF's care are already accustomed to interacting with humans and therefore must be retrained to survive in the wild. Therefore, education and empowerment of communities surrounding the release areas are key.

In addition to conservation aspects, Nanik also encourages community empowerment activities to align with poverty alleviation efforts, so that the program's benefits can simultaneously impact social and ecological aspects. Through closer collaboration between the business world, conservation organizations, and the community, the mission of preserving Indonesia's nature and wildlife can be achieved sustainably.

Zona 9 is part of the Pertamina Upstream Subholding Regional 3 Kalimantan, which is managed by PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI). The company entities in Zona 9 are Production Sharing Contract Contractors (KKKS) that collaborate with SKK Migas to manage upstream oil and gas operations and businesses by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the Sanga Sanga and Sangatta Working Areas in East Kalimantan and Tanjung in South Kalimantan. PHI subsidiaries and affiliates in Zona 9 implement innovative Corporate Social Responsibility programs in the areas of Economy, Education, Health, Environment, Infrastructure, and Disaster Response to support sustainable community empowerment and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). PHI is headquartered in Jakarta. Further information about PHI is available at https://phi.pertamina.com.
