Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Visits PHM Upstream Oil and Gas Operations: Commitment to Boosting National Energy Production

Kutai Kartanegara– PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), welcomed the Working Visit of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources/Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) of the Republic of Indonesia, Bahlil Lahadalia, to the Senipah Peciko South Mahakam (SPS) field located in Samboja District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. The visit aimed to directly observe the infrastructure and upstream oil and gas operations in East Kalimantan Province, ensure the sustainability of national energy production, and reaffirm the government's commitment to sustainably increasing national oil and gas output.

During the visit, Bahlil Lahadalia was accompanied by East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas'ud, Head of SKK Migas Djoko Siswanto, and President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Simon Aloysius Mantiri. Upon arrival at the SPS Field, the delegation was welcomed by the President Director of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Chalid Said Salim, President Director of Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) Sunaryanto, PHM General Manager Setyo Sapto Edi, and other members of the management team. The group toured the main production facilities at the SPS Field and received presentations on operational performance, technological innovations, and efficiency efforts implemented by PHM to maintain sustainable oil and gas production in the Mahakam Working Area while also building a strong culture of occupational health safety, security, and environment (HSSE) as a core pillar of operations.

In his remarks, Chalid Said Salim expressed his appreciation to the Minister of ESDM for visiting the SPS field. "This visit is an honor for us and a tangible form of government support and attention to our work in the upstream oil and gas sector. That support serves as a driving force for us to continue delivering excellent and sustainable performance," Chalid said.

Meanwhile, in his operational performance briefing, Setyo Sapto Edi emphasized that PHM prioritizes innovation, the application of technology, digitalization, and safety principles as part of a long-term strategy to sustainably increase production, in line with the national oil and gas production targets set by the government. "At PHM, we are committed to conducting safe, reliable, compliant, and efficient upstream oil and gas operations, driven by innovation and adopting the latest technologies. The SPS Field is one example of how a mature field can be optimally managed while maintaining productivity and ensuring environmental sustainability," explained Setyo.

Setyo also reported that PHM's year-to-date production as of March 2025 reached 439 Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day (MMSCFD) of gas and 25.1 Thousand Barrels of Oil Per Day (BOPD). Regarding drilling activities, PHM has successfully drilled 20 new wells. These achievements are supported by PHM's strategies in field optimization, application of advanced technologies, and operational efficiencies, allowing production to remain stable amid global oil and gas industry challenges. In addition to production accomplishments, PHM also reaffirmed its strong commitment to workplace safety. As of March 29, 2025, PHM had recorded 571 days, or 44,294,278 working hours, without a lost-time incident. "This achievement results from a deeply embedded safety culture across all PHM operations, including intensive training programs and strengthened compliance with safety standards," he added.

Setyo further stated that all of PHM and its subsidiaries' positive achievements are made possible by the support from both central and regional governments, close collaboration with all stakeholders, and the dedication of employees--key factors in meeting national production targets. "This success results from hard work, collaboration across the entire company, and support from various stakeholders. We will continue striving to improve operational performance while prioritizing safety and sustainability to make an optimal contribution to national energy resilience," he said.

In response to Setyo's presentation, Bahlil Lahadalia expressed appreciation for the dedication and innovations undertaken by PHI through PHM in maintaining oil and gas production levels amid complex operational challenges, especially in mature fields. "I hope PHM will continue focusing on increasing oil lifting to support national energy resilience, with full support from all industry players. The government is committed to continuously fostering a conducive investment climate and supporting exploration and the development of new oil and gas fields," said Bahlil. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and the upstream oil and gas industry in achieving national production targets and reiterated the government's commitment to creating an investment climate that accelerates exploration and production activities.
