Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) and PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS) received two national awards at the 2025 Corporate Social Responsibility dan Pembangunan Desa Berkelanjutan (CSR & PDB) Awards organized by the Indonesian Social Sustainability Forum (ISSF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions (Kemendes PDT) in Jakarta on Tuesday (September 30, 2025). This year marked the fourth edition of the CSR & PDB Awards.
Both subsidiaries of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) earned this recognition for their commitment to implementing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. These programs contribute to accelerating rural and regional development in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovative and collaborative initiatives. PHSS received the Gold Award for its program “Balanipa: We Cycle,” while PHM earned the Silver Award for its “Komik Pesut Mahakam” program focused on the conservation of the endemic Mahakam River dolphin.
The award ceremony was attended by Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Yandri Susanto, Deputy Minister Ahmad Riza Patria, ISSF Founder, as well as representatives from ministries, regional governments, and corporations.
In his remarks, Minister Yandri expressed his appreciation to state-owned and private companies that have made tangible contributions to village development across Indonesia. “Let’s work hand in hand to build our villages. Our tagline today is ‘Build Villages, Build Indonesia,’ because developing villages means building Indonesia,” he said.
PHI’s Manager of Communication, Relations & CID, Dony Indrawan, who attended and received the award, stated that this recognition reflected PHI’s strong commitment to integrating sustainability values into its CSR programs. “We believe that innovative, inclusive, and impactful social initiatives are essential foundations to support village development, improve community welfare, and preserve the environment,” he said.
The “Balanipa: We Cycle” program, run by the Balanipa Joint Business Group (KUBE) in Muara Badak, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, is PHSS’s flagship CSR initiative. Through its Balanipa Rope Technology (Barotech) innovation, the community successfully repurposed used ship ropes into higher-value products with improved quality. “This innovation not only boosts productivity and efficiency but also strengthens community economic independence while supporting SDG Goals 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production),” Dony explained.
He also elaborated that PHM’s “Komik Pesut Mahakam” program focuses on conserving the endangered Mahakam River dolphin through collaboration with local communities and regional governments through education, training, and sustainable tourism development. “This initiative has supported the growth of Pela Village as a nationally and internationally recognized conservation-based tourism destination, directly contributing to SDG Goals 8 (Economic Growth) and 13 (Climate Action).”
Aligned with the sustainability policies of Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) and PT Pertamina (Persero), PHI and its subsidiaries remain committed to advancing low-carbon upstream oil and gas operations in support of Indonesia’s net-zero emission target by 2060 or sooner. “At PHI, we believe that the sustainability of current and future oil and gas production depends on our ability to apply the principles of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) across all operational and business activities,” he added.
This recognition further reinforces PHI’s contribution to advancing national development, extending beyond its core role in delivering sustainable oil and gas production. “Villages hold a strategic role, as stated in Indonesia’s Asta Cita 6, to drive equitable economic growth and reduce poverty through village-centered development,” he concluded.
PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) is part of Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, which manages upstream oil and gas operations and businesses in Regional 3, Kalimantan, covering Zona 8, 9, and 10, in accordance with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to achieve its vision of becoming a world-class oil and gas company.
