Applying Sustainability Principles, PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia Achieves Significant Carbon Footprint Reduction

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), through its subsidiaries and affiliates, successfully recorded a total emissions reduction of 222.87 thousand tons of CO₂eq in 2024, marking a 32.88% increase compared to 2023. This achievement demonstrates the company's commitment to conducting upstream oil and gas operations while adhering to sustainability principles and making significant progress in environmental management throughout 2024.

PHI's Manager of Environment, Kemas Adrian, emphasized the company's dedication to operating greener and more sustainable. This commitment aligns with the company's strategy to become a globally competitive, environmentally responsible energy company. "Sustainability is not just a goal but an integral part of our business strategy. Every step we take in energy efficiency, waste management, and emissions reduction reflects our responsibility toward a cleaner energy future," he stated.

According to Kemas, PHI has implemented various initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, optimize water resource usage, and enhance eco-friendly waste management. "To cut greenhouse gas emissions, PHI has implemented 33 emissions reduction programs throughout 2024," he explained.

Beyond carbon footprint reduction, the company has also focused on water efficiency. In 2024, PHI-Regional 3 Kalimantan successfully reduced clean water consumption by 243,102 thousand cubic meters, achieving a 24.12% efficiency compared to the baseline consumption 2020. Water savings also increased by 63.8% compared to the previous year, demonstrating the effectiveness of the company's water resource efficiency strategies in significantly reducing consumption.

In waste management, PHI-Regional 3 Kalimantan has implemented 44 programs based on the 4R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace), contributing to a reduction of 72,931 thousand tons of hazardous (B3) and non-hazardous waste. The company has also enhanced its circular economy approach to waste management, achieving an 84.70% success rate in 2024. This achievement underscores how innovative waste management practices benefit the environment and operational efficiency.

PHI's commitment aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13: Climate Action, which highlights the importance of concrete steps in addressing climate change and its negative impacts.

PHI's emissions reduction efforts contributed 18.7% to Subholding Upstream Pertamina's overall emissions reduction target, highlighting its strategic role in supporting sustainable national energy policies.
