Looking at Organic Waste Utilization, PT Pertamina EP Sangatta Holds Maggot Cultivation Training

East Kutai -  PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangatta Field, through its flagship program Bintang Pertiwi, held a Maggot Cultivation Training in Gang Kamarema, Pinang Raya Village, South Sangatta District, East Kutai Regency, on Saturday, May 24, 2025. The training aims to introduce the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF), also known as maggots, as an innovative solution for managing household organic waste through the application of the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

Through maggot cultivation, waste that previously burdened the environment can be utilized as products with economic value, such as for chicken and fish feed, while also having a positive ecological impact. PEP Sangatta Manager Cahyo Nugroho said that this training is a form of the Company's commitment to supporting sustainable environmental management through a community empowerment approach. "The Bintang Pertiwi program is not limited to waste management activities but also includes mushroom cultivation, horticulture, livestock, and fisheries," said Cahyo. The Company implements social and environmental innovation in its CSR programs to provide a significant and sustainable impact on society.

As a manifestation of the collaborative spirit, this activity involved various stakeholders including the Berseri Women Farmers Group, South Sangatta Agricultural Extension Workers/Penyuluh Pertanian Lapangan (PPL), East Kutai Organic Farming Development Drivers/ Penggerak Pengembangan Pertanian Organik Kutai Timur (P3OKT), CSR fostered partners of Pertamina Patra Niaga AFT Sepinggan Balikpapan, and the social institution Careid which acted as a training facilitator as well as a resource provider.

As a resource person and CSR fostered partner of Pertamina Patra Niaga AFT Sepinggan Balikpapan, Thomas Sakino delivered material and guided a hands-on practice session on maggot cultivation techniques. Based on his experience and expertise, he provided an inspiring perspective for the participants, especially in exploring the potential economic value and ecological contribution of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) cultivation.

The Head of Berseri Women Farmers Group, Sri Subekti, expressed his appreciation for the training and assistance provided by PEP Sangatta Field. "Thank you to Pertamina for facilitating the training and assistance of maggot tower houses and mushroom baglog press tools that are very useful for our community and environment. Hopefully, this program can be an example of zero waste education and a trigger for the waste management movement in Sangatta City," he said.

This activity is also real evidence that the success of waste management and strengthening food security can be achieved through cross-sector cooperation and direct community empowerment. Through multi-party synergy and an inclusive empowerment approach, the maggot cultivation training program reflects a paradigm transformation in environmental management from merely waste mitigation to creating sustainable added value. This initiative also strengthens the community's capacity to address waste problems and local food challenges, highlighting the strategic role of the upstream oil and gas industry sector, notably PEP Sangatta Field, in promoting environmentally based social innovation.
