Support Sustainability: PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia CEO Visits CSR Program Utilizing Fern Roots on Bunyu Island

Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan– The CEO of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), Sunaryanto, visited one of the company's flagship CSR programs, the Media Tanam Akar Pakis Untuk Bunyu Pertanian Unggul (Mantap Betul) program, on Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan. This event, titled Management Goes To Community (MGTC), represents the top management's commitment to supporting community development programs and allows local beneficiaries to engage directly with PHI's highest leadership.

The Mantap Betul program is an innovation that utilizes fern roots as a planting medium for hydroponic and conventional agriculture. Ferns are abundant on Bunyu Island and have been considered weeds, of no commercial value, and a nuisance to aesthetics and land utility. The local community is accustomed to clearing fern plants by burning them.

Utilizing fern roots as a planting medium can reduce carbon emissions from burning ferns. Additionally, the Mantap Betul program supports food security on Bunyu Island.

According to Anto, the nickname for PHI's CEO Sunaryanto, collaboration with all stakeholders can drive innovative CSR programs that create shared value. "At PHI, we believe that a harmonious relationship with the communities in our operational areas supports the success and sustainability of our operations and business," he added during his visit on August 15.

Under the Mantap Betul Program initiated by PHI's subsidiary, PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field, the management of fern roots weighing 54.24 kg per year can reduce carbon emissions by 0.951 tons CO2eq. In addition, this program also contributes to saving water consumption of around 8,250 liters and 400 kg of fertilizer for each planting period. "The implementation of social and environmental innovations in the Company's CSR program will have a significant and sustainable impact on society and the environment. This needs to be encouraged," said Anto.

In executing the program, PEP Bunyu collaborates with local youth organizations and women's farming groups to produce and market fern roots and their by-products and develop hydroponic agriculture for various vegetable products. Additionally, the Mantap Betul program has led to the formation of a Joint Business Group/ Kelompok Usaha Bersama (KUB) that sells various agricultural supplies, equipment, and produce.

During his visit to Bunyu Island, the PHI CEO also conducted a Management Walkthrough (MWT) at PEP Bunyu Field's operational and production facilities. This activity allows the company's management to engage in direct dialogue and discussion with field workers, particularly regarding safety aspects. The CEO was accompanied by VP of Production & Operation Achmad Jamaludin, VP of Development & Drilling Reza Rinaldi Zein, VP of Exploration Sri Hartanto, GM of Zona 10 Yoseph Agung Prihartono, and other PEP Bunyu management.

Anto urged all workers to prioritize safety as the most crucial aspect and foundation of all company operations and business activities. He also encouraged workers to adopt best safety practices in the national and global upstream oil and gas industry to produce safe, environmentally friendly, and sustainable energy. "I am confident that excellent safety performance will support the success and sustainability of the company's oil and gas operations, and each worker plays a vital role in building a safety culture to achieve zero incidents," he added.
