Balikpapan – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) successfully achieved onstream at Platform WPS-5 under the Sisi Nubi Area of Interest (SNB AOI 1-3-5) Project, located offshore in the Mahakam Delta, East Kalimantan, on 23 February 2026. The onstream activities included the initial production of two new wells, testing of production facilities within Platform WPS-5, and pipeline network testing. The successful onstream of Platform WPS-5 follows the earlier achievement at Platform WPS-4 on 4 December 2025. The total wellhead gas production from both platforms reaches approximately 45 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd).
The Sisi Nubi AOI Project is part of the Company’s field development strategy to sustain production and strengthen its contribution to the national gas supply. The operation of two new wells, SS-505 on 21 February 2026 and SS-504 on 23 February 2026, marks a significant milestone in the area’s development. Of the total six platforms planned under the SNB AOI 1-3-5 Project, two have now successfully gone onstream. In addition to the two operational platforms, one platform is currently in the well intervention and well connection preparation stage, while the other two are in the drilling phase.
PHM General Manager, Setyo Sapto Edi, stated that the successful onstream of the two wells at Platform WPS-5 supports the sustainability of oil and gas production in the Mahakam Working Area (WK Mahakam). “This achievement reflects PHM’s strong commitment to maintaining sustainable oil and gas production in support of national energy resilience, in line with the Government’s Asta Cita on energy self-sufficiency,” he said.
He added that the SNB AOI Project demonstrates the Company’s continued commitment to investing in exploration and exploitation activities to discover new resources, add reserves, and increase production, thereby supporting the sustainability of national oil and gas output from Kalimantan. This region plays a vital role in Indonesia’s energy supply. “With project implementation progressing as planned, the completion of all six platforms is expected to enhance production capacity further optimally and reliably,” he explained.
Setyo also emphasized that the Company’s commitment to innovation and technology aligns with the policies of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), the Company's parent company, and PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding. “We believe that the application of innovation and technology is a strategic step to maintain production levels and mitigate the natural decline rate of mature oil and gas fields in the Kalimantan region,” he noted.
Initial production from Well SS-505 began flowing gradually after the clean-up stage conducted on 21–22 February 2026, reaching 12 mmscfd. The cleanup process used a sand filter to ensure the reliability of the production facilities. Upon completion of the clean-up, a gradual ramp-down procedure was carried out on 23 February 2026 to assess reservoir response and evaluate well performance after ramp-up. The next stages included rigging down the sand filter unit and reinstating the flowline system to its standard operating configuration. After all stages were declared safe and ready for operation, Well SS-505 was reopened in accordance with procedures, with a more controlled production target of 10–11 mmscfd.
Following the successful operation of Well SS-505, initial production for Well SS-504 commenced with a clean-up stage on 23–24 February 2026. As with the previous well, the opening was conducted gradually through a sand filter unit to ensure clean flow and maintain production facility integrity. At the final stage of the clean-up process on 24 February 2026, Well SS-504 officially reached its production target in accordance with procedures, achieving a gas rate of 11.4 mmscfd at a choke opening of 46/64”.
