Jakarta- PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS) promotes the Balanipa Program, the company's flagship CSR program in the environmental and economic fields in the Muara Badak area, East Kalimantan with an innovation in the form of processing used rope waste into quality ropes for FADs. Promotional activities were carried out to oil and gas workers in Pertamina's Upstream Subholding environment through the Komet (Knowledge Management) Webinar Forum facilitated by the Directorate of Human Resources of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) on August 12, 2024.
The social innovation of the Balanipa Program began with environmental concerns about the large amount of used ship ropes in the Muara Badak waters, amounting to 180 tons per year. PHSS and its partner Kelompok Usaha Bersama (KUBE) initiated a joint effort where the ropes used were spun again by combining them with nylon, silk, and semi-silk ropes to produce stronger ropes. This "new" product is then sold as FAD ropes.
In this program, PHSS and KUBE Balanipa have also developed the Barotech (Balanipa Rope Technology) innovation, which simplifies the rope-spinning process and makes it more efficient in terms of time, quantity, and quality.
During the Forum Komet Webinar, PHSS featured two speakers: Ade Diar Suhendar, senior manager of production and project Zona 9, and Elis Fauziyah, Head of Communication Relations and CID Zona 9.
Ade Diar Suhendar explained that the development of the Balanipa Program also includes knowledge transfer from oil and gas workers in Zona 9 Subholding Upstream Pertamina to partner members. "The knowledge transfer covers several aspects such as technology and infrastructure capabilities and market-interface capabilities," Ade explained. This includes designing and assembling spinning machines, patent registration, digital financial record training, disaster readiness training, SOP development assistance, and branding and marketing training.
According to Ade, this program aligns with Pertamina's efforts and policies on emission reduction and climate change management to support business, social, and environmental sustainability.
Meanwhile, Head of Communication & CID Zona 9 Elis Fauziyah explained that the Balanipa Program has processed 81 tons of rope waste and contributed to reducing emissions by 419.58 tons of CO2 eq per year. This program, continued Elis, has produced 450 rope rollers with a monthly turnover of IDR 168 million. KUBE Balanipa currently has 15 members.
"Thanks to consistent efforts and the benefits generated, the Balanipa Program has won several awards at the regional and national levels, including the Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals Award (ISDA) 2021 with the achievement of SDGs 12.5; the Gold Kukar CSR Award 2023 for the Biosphere subcategory; and the Gold ISRA Awards 2024 for the Economic Empowerment category," she said.
According to Elis, the Balanipa Program also contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 5 on Gender Equality, Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.
