PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Sets New Record for Well Drilling in the Delta Mahakam with Master Drilling Technology Innovation

Balikpapan- PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) has achieved a new record in the fastest and longest drilling penetration rates for oil and gas wells in the Delta Mahakam field. This accomplishment was made amid increasingly complex drilling challenges by applying innovative and optimized technology using the MaxiDrill drilling method, PHM's master drilling technology.

PHM's success in achieving the fastest rate of penetration (Rate of Penetration/ROP) was recorded during the drilling of well H-SA-510, with an average ROP of 116 meters per hour. This figure represents the highest ROP recorded for the 12-1/4" surface section in the Handil field throughout the Mahakam field's history. The Yani rig set a new drilling record on August 21, 2024.

Additionally, PHM recorded an excellent ROP achievement for well H-YA-355, with an average of 111 meters per hour. This figure is the highest On Bottom Rate of Penetration (OB ROP) for the 8-1/2" reservoir section in the Handil field's history. The Yani rig also set a new record on June 2, 2024.

PHM achieved a milestone with the TM-66.G1 sidetrack well, marking it as the longest well drilled in the Mahakam field's Tambora area. The well was successfully completed with a trajectory length of 3,300 meters, setting a record in Tambora's history. This record was subsequently surpassed by the Yani rig on June 17, 2024.

PHM General Manager Setyo Sapto Edi said that the company always encourages the application of innovation, technology, and best engineering practices that can improve the safety, speed, and cost efficiency of drilling. "These three drilling records can be achieved thanks to efforts to optimize the MaxiDrill drilling method applied in drilling activities in the Mahakam Working Area. Thus, the company can maintain the recovery and production levels of the oil and gas fields it manages," Setyo explained.

Setyo added that the initiatives and innovations leading to these record-breaking achievements have resulted in faster drilling durations, thereby making drilling costs more efficient. "In line with the company's commitment, we prioritize HSSE aspects in every drilling activity. We apply best practices, innovations, and technologies that can enhance safety and speed and reduce drilling costs," he emphasized.

This success also increases the motivation of workers in the Mahakam field. Despite being faced with a marginal field with increasingly complex well drilling challenges, there is room for improvement that can still be optimized. Setyo believes that the Mahakam field can still be relied upon to continue producing and supporting the fulfillment of Indonesia's energy needs.
