PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Records Cost Optimization Through the Application of Technological Innovations in the Peciko Field

Balikpapan–PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) noted the success of innovative drilling technology in the Peciko Field, which reduced drilling duration by up to 7 hours and saved costs of up to USD 59,000. The PK-E17.G1 well was drilled using the AE-1 rig. This drilling is the fastest section 6" Open Hole (OH) drilling in Mahakam offshore, with a 31.79 m/hour speed.

This optimization was achieved by installing a 7-inch liner with a length of 3,239 meters. In addition, this drill uses a tool to enlarge the hole (under reamer) along 3,085 meters and is the most extended drill with a hole size of 8.5 inches x 9.5 inches.

Besides this success, drilling in the Peciko Field also set a record for other wells. In PK-E3, PHM managed to use a ratio of horizontal distance and vertical depth of 2.5, the record for the most significant comparison ratio in the history of the Mahakam offshore. The drilling succeeded in getting the reservoir target in the shallow zone within 4.73 days safely and securely.

Meanwhile, the PK-E24.G1 and PK-E25.G1 wells, which are sidetrack re-entry wells on the PK-E platform, succeeded in carrying out the fastest dual casing milling in the history of Mahakam Offshore. This activity was completed in 6.5 hours, 30 minutes shorter than the previous double casing milling time at the Peciko Field.

Acting PHM General Manager Ferico Afrinas conveyed that the Company implemented the Maxidrill method, utilizing the Rotary Steerable System (RSS) Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA). "This innovation is carried out by using tools according to formation conditions and optimizing drilling parameters when drilling so that it has an impact on the overall performance of drilling activities," said Federico.

President Director of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), John Anis said PHM has successfully implemented the use of technology that can increase safety and speed and reduce drilling costs, "We apply best practices to maintain production levels and restrain the rate of natural production decline in supporting the achievement of the national oil and gas production target," said John.
