Jakarta- In commemoration of World Environment Day 2024, PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) initiated an activity to plant 500 Rhizopora mangrove seedlings at Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) Mangrove Ecotourism, Jakarta, on June 15, 2024. This activity was carried out thanks to PHI's collaboration with the Lindungi Hutan Foundation, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Parks and Urban Forests Office, and the Flora Mangrove Forest Farmer Group. About 50 PHI workers participated in this planting activity.
Pjs. Senior Manager HSSE PHI Sidik Mastrilianto explained that this mangrove seedling planting activity is a form of the Company's commitment to supporting sustainability, environmental preservation, and the economic development of farmer groups. "The company always carries out environmental management programs by its commitment to reduce carbon emissions, carry out energy efficiency and environmental conservation, and support Pertamina's energy transition policy and net zero emission in 2060," he explained. This year, World Environment Day commemorates the theme Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience to campaign for environmental restoration activities.
According to Sidik, through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, the Company supports the development and independence of communities in line with the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Regarding mangrove planting activities, the SDG goals to be achieved are Goal 1 on improving the economy of farmers and residents, Goal 8 on providing working hours for residents, Goal 13 on helping to reduce carbon emissions, and Goal 15 on preventing land degradation due to abrasion, reducing the impact of flooding on residential areas, and increasing green cover areas.
Meanwhile, PHI Environment Manager Kemas Adrian hopes that planting mangrove trees can contribute to the sustainability and balance of the ecosystem in the PIK Mangrove Ecotourism area in particular and the Jakarta area in general. Through the involvement of workers, Kemas hopes that this planting activity can increase participants' knowledge of preserving the environment and spread the spirit of greening to all workers.
"The planted mangrove seedlings will then be monitored regularly by Yayasan Lindungi Hutan, starting from the condition of the trees, tree height, number of leaves, and socio-economic and environmental impacts. The presence of mangrove seedlings is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by around 36 kg CO2 eq," Kemas added.
Angke Kapuk Mangrove Forest Supervisor Sunarmin expressed his hope that planting activities can be consistently carried out. "This mangrove planting has a positive impact and benefits not only the environment but also economically to the Flora Mangrove Forest Farmer Group and local residents."
