PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) received two PROPER Green awards for SPU (South Processing Unit) dan Bekapai, Senipah, Peciko, South Mahakam (BSP) fields from the Indonesian Environment and Forestry Ministry.
The award was given by Environment and Forestry Minister Dr. Siti Nurbaya Bakar to PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia President Director Bambang Manumayoso and PHM General Manager John Anis during the 2018 PROPER Awarding Night at Bidakara Hotel on 27 December 2018.
PROPER (Environmental Management Company Performance Rating Program) is a national scale compliance performance evaluation to businesses from various sectors that left potentially significant impact to the environment through the guidance and supervision mechanism on environmental management.
The PROPER Green title is an award for business that complied with the prevailing laws and regulations in the environmental field. In the Green title, businesses are encouraged to apply green economy programs in their environmental management system and resources utilization through energy efficiency, greenhouse and conventional gases reduction, water conservation, water pollution reduction, biohazard waste reduction and 3R (Reuse, Reduce & Recycle) implementation for household wastes, as well as biodiversity. The ministry also encourages to improve local communities' socio-economic condition through the application of various programs that covers aspects of: charity, infrastructure, capacity building and community empowerment.
The cumulative performance in the BSP, HCA, NPU, SPU fields from January 2017 to June 2018 resulted in energy efficiency of 8,125,944 Gigajoule, greenhouse gases reduction of 366,505 tons CO<sub>2</sub> eq, water conservation of 63,414 cubic meter, water pollution reduction of 4,064 tons, biohazard waste reduction of 8,028 tons, reuse, reduce and recycled 195 tons of household wastes, biodiversity protection was also achieved through mangrove vegetation planting monitoring for 336,243 trees, and community development funds that reached Rp 18,2 billion.
The ministry hoped that PROPER could be a driver to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target. According to President Regulation No. 59/2017 on the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals Achievement, the SDGs were aimed to maintain the community's economic welfare improvement, community life, environment quality and inclusive development, as well as maintain governance to preserve the quality of life for the next generation. In 2017 to 2018, 90% of green economy and community development programs conducted by PHM operational fields supported the achievement of SDGs.
The Green PROPER award completed other important certification that PHM have achieved in 2018, such as: (1) International Sustainability Rating System 8 (ISRS 8) certification from international consultancy firm DNV GL after going through full assessment in October 2018; (2) ISO14001:2015 certification for environmental management system in July 2018 for 6 production facilities and well construction; and, (3) ISO22301:2012 certification for business sustainablity management system in February 2018.
