PHKT Holds Oil Spill Mitigation Training in Marangkayu Waters

Kutai Kartanegara – PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT) held a training on oil spill mitigation in the waters for residents of Marangkayu District in mid-September 2022. This plate is the collaboration with stakeholders such as fishermen and youth in maintaining the environment in the Marangkayu water area and maintaining the security and safety of upstream oil and gas facilities and operations in the region.

Section Head of Maintenance of Zona 10 Hendra Murdani explained that this training is the company's commitment to supporting community capacity building so that participants can identify and overcome, as well as make a study of social, economic, and environmental impact analysis in the event of an oil spill case.

"This training is a capacity-building activity for Non-Governmental Organizations to Handle Spilled Oil (Swastamita) which was formed in 2021 and is a continuation of the previous year. The training was carried out in 3 stages in mid-September with participants from 3 villages in ring 1 Santan Terminal, Sebuntal Village, Semangko Village, and Kersik Village," explained Hendra.

In this training, participants were provided with the basic material on the meaning of oil spills, the causes of oil spills, as well as the manufacture and simulation of simple equipment, used when there is an oil spill. The oil spill mitigation method in this training is a replication of innovations from Pertamina Zona 10 Officers who have won the Platinum category at the 2022 APQ award, the Subroto Award Special Innovation, and have received Patent Rights from DJKI.

"After this training, the volunteers will act as the frontline in carrying out oil spill mitigation and are always on standby to patrol when there is an oil spill at sea," added Hendra.

In this training, the Head of Kersik Jumadi Village was present, who provided his support in the implementation of this training. "This training is a joint effort in maintaining the marine ecosystem of Marangkayu so that the environment is better maintained and fishermen are not disturbed when looking for fish," concluded Jumadi.

Non-Governmental Organizations Handle Spilled Oil (Swastamita) is a Community Development Program (PPM) in the field of disaster launched by the PHKT of the Northern Operating Area (DOBU). The name Swastamita from Sanskrit means beautiful scenery at sunset. The hope is that this group can help protect the waters of the Marangkayu sea, and coastal communities have a reference when facing conditions related to oil spills.

In the first year, they received training in handling spilled oil with coco fiber. In this system, coconut shell fiber is used as an oil spill containment tool, and integrase waste banks with a private program. Meanwhile, in the second year, participants were given a briefing on oil spill management.
