Penajam Paser Utara - PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT), which is part of Zona 10 Subholding Upstream Regional 3 Kalimantan has committed to continue to carry out safe, effective, efficient, compliant and environmentally friendly oil and gas operations. The consistency of PHKT is evidenced by the company's participation in the PROPER program in striving for the PROPER beyond compliance award. After winning the Green PROPER the previous year, PHKT is now ready to win the Gold PROPER award.
PROPER is a Company Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management held by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The Black Fly Cultivation Program or “Bulatih”, which is a CSR program of PHKT in the DOBS (Southern Operational Area) area, PHKT is one of the candidates for Proper Gold in 2021.
The Bulatih program is a community empowerment program in the environmental field by utilizing and managing organic waste through the cultivation of BSF (Black Soldier Fly), the results of which are used as an alternative to animal feed. The reason behind the implementation of the Bulatih program is to teach the society about the benefits of organic waste that has not been used all this time, in which it has economic value if it is used decently.
In mid-2019, with internal and external PHKT initiatives, the Bulatih program was initiated at the Lawe-Lawe PHKT Terminal. Initially, it started by using organic waste from catering food leftovers from the Lawe-Lawe Terminal kitchen. The program was successfully able to reduce the balance of organic waste disposal to the TPA. The socialization began with 3 mentoring groups, namely: the HIMPULI Group and the Hidayatullah Group in Girimukti Village, as well as for empowering women to the Maggot Lestari Women Business Group in Tanjung Tengah Village, where PHKT facilitated the manufacture of cages, assistance with tools for the BSF (Black Soldier Fly) production process to train and assist during the process.
Assistant Manager Environmental Zona 10, Chandra Sunaryo, explained that BULATIH is a tangible form of PHKT's commitment to bring innovation in environmental management, not only internally for the company, but also integrated with the Comdev program with the intention to have a wider effect on the community in PPU Regency. "This innovation program is also expected to contribute to the preparation of PPU Regency to become the new environmentally friendly State Capital," added Chandra.
The three PHKT assisted groups felt very helpful with the alternative feed in the form of maggot for their livestock. In fact, groups of poultry farmers can save 30% on feed costs or the equivalent value of Rp. 828.000, -/3months. The amount of savings can be used for livestock of 100 birds. Meanwhile, for the catfish farmer group, they can save IDR 3,000,000 / month. From January to August 2021, the organic waste that has been used for maggot feed is 1,697.5 kilograms or almost 1.7 tons.
Superintendent of Lawe-Lawe Terminal, Bagus Wibatsu Wahyuntoro, supports the BULATIH program as a form of synergy between PHKT and stakeholders at Lawe-Lawe Terminal to stride towards Zero Domestic Waste by using BSF (Black Soldier Fly) which will give benefit to the community, especially in North Penajam Paser Regency, in the vicinity of the Lawe-Lawe Terminal operation area. "Hopefully, this effort can improve the economy of humankind, as well as an independent and sustainable solution for the community's domestic waste," said Bagus.
This program has taken place in becoming the main winner of the 1st Place Award for the Appropriate Technology Innovation Competition (TTG), which was organized by the North Penajam Paser Regency Bapelitbang (PPU). The award was handed over directly by Plt. Head of the PPU Bapelitbang, Yunita L. Damayanti, M.E. on September 24, 2020, at the PPU Regent's office. The award was received by Prayitno, a PHKT worker at Lawe-Lawe Terminal, who was one of the initiators of the BULATIH program at Lawe-Lawe Terminal.
The Head of the North Penajam Paser Environmental Service, Tita Deritayani, truly appreciates and supports the PHKT with this Bulatih program in terms of processing waste at the PPU. “Solving the waste problem also includes changing behaviour and thinking patterns in using it, which is the duty of the Environment Agency to synergize with schools, the community; with the aim to support the effort in optimising organic waste, "said Tita.
Future development plans are the establishment of an Organic Waste Management Education Center at the PPU Regency TPS3R, facilitating the expansion of the marketing network for maggot products, developing waste recycling products, providing literacy for local content curriculum utilization of organic waste and black fly cultivation, and strengthening group business units.
This activity is also in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely goal 9: to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industries, and encourage innovation, and goal 11: to make cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; as well as goal 12: to ensure responsible patterns of production and consumption.
