PHI Supports Orangutan Conservation in Kalimantan as a Consistent Step to Apply ESG Principles

Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) supports orangutan conservation through an orangutan rehabilitation program in Samboja Lestari, East Kalimantan, in collaboration with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS Foundation). The collaboration between PHI and the BOS Foundation has been running since 2021 with a series of programs that have been running, including an online seminar to explain the importance of orangutans' role in protecting the ecosystem and the environment, as well as the rescue and release of orangutans in the future.

PHI adopted 3 orangutans, Bagus, Ecky and Pedrosa. Each individual is prepared for re-release to their habitat, by paying attention to their history of reintroduction, the degree of their aggressiveness, and the degree of their ability to return to life in their habitat. Orangutans have high intelligence, where 97% of their DNA is the same as humans, which has an important role in maintaining the health of tropical forest ecosystems, because they are the best seed dispersers, namely by exploring an extraordinary distance while removing seeds.

PHI Senior Manager Relations Farah Dewi explained that PHI consistently applies the principles of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) in carrying out upstream oil and gas operations and businesses wherever the Company operates.

"PHI and its subsidiaries continue to strive to carry out Corporate Social Responsibility programs in the environmental sector, where one of them is in the form of orangutan conservation activities, by collaborating with stakeholders to protect the safety and security of humans and the environment," explained Farah.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Bos Foundation, Dr. Jamartin Sihite, expressed his appreciation for PHI's support for the orangutan rehabilitation program in Samboja Lestari, East Kalimantan.

"Collaborative efforts from all stakeholders are needed, including the participation of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia is very important so that efforts to preserve this species and its habitat can run optimally," said Jamartin.

Jamartin added that orangutans are one of the great ape species whose existence is very important in maintaining the balance and health of the ecosystem. As a protected animal with a critical status, orangutan conservation efforts are not only our common concern at the national but also international levels.

In commemoration of World Orangutan Day which is celebrated every August 18, PHI Environment Manager Kemas Adrian hopes that the Company's support can have a positive impact on the environment. "We strive to continue to implement various social and environmental innovations in the implementation of the Company's CSR programs so that they can have a significant and sustainable impact; which is in line with efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), that is points 13 and 15 related to climate change and maintaining ecosystems on land," explained Kemas.
