PHI, Directorate General of Oil and Gas, and SKK Migas Kalimantan Sulawesi Conduct Monitoring and Evaluation of CSR Programs to Strengthen Positive Community Impact

Balikpapan– PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), together with the Directorate General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources/Direktorat Jenderal Minyak dan Gas Bumi Kementerian ESDM (Ditjen Migas KESDM) and SKK Migas Kalimantan Sulawesi Representative Office (SKK Migas Kalsul), conducted a working visit to the company's Community Involvement and Development (CID) program sites in East Kalimantan on June 30–July 1, 2026. The visit was carried out as part of a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) initiative at two flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs: the Sungai Hitam Lestari Ecoriparian Program in Kutai Kartanegara and the Waste to Energy for Community (Wasteco) Program in Balikpapan.

PHI Manager of Communication Relations & CID, Dony Indrawan, stated that the company's CID programs are an integral part of its social and environmental responsibility to support community self-reliance and environmental sustainability.

"To ensure that our CID or CSR programs deliver tangible benefits and meaningful impacts to communities in our operational areas, we conduct regular monitoring and evaluation activities, including direct visits to project sites and discussions with beneficiary communities and local governments," he explained.

During this visit, PHI collaborated with representatives from the Ditjen Migas KESDM and SKK Migas to jointly conduct on-site monitoring and evaluation of CID programs managed by PHI's subsidiaries and affiliates. The joint activity reflects the strong commitment and collaboration among upstream oil and gas stakeholders, which serves as a critical foundation for advancing sustainability.

"This activity also serves as a platform to strengthen institutional relationships while fostering a shared understanding of the dynamics of the upstream oil and gas industry, challenges encountered in the field, and opportunities for collaboration in supporting national energy security," he added.

Dony further noted that the visit also functioned as a coordination and communication forum to exchange updates on PHI's operational activities, public communication initiatives, and strategic programs across its upstream oil and gas working areas in Kalimantan. Prior to the field visits, he presented PHI's achievements and ongoing efforts in strengthening corporate communications, stakeholder relations, and CID implementation to support operational excellence and enhance the company's positive reputation.

Meanwhile, Head of SKK Migas Kalimantan Sulawesi Representative Office, Haryanto Syafri, emphasized the importance of cross-institutional coordination and communication to ensure that issues can be managed quickly, accurately, and effectively. According to him, every positive achievement in the upstream oil and gas industry should be consistently documented and communicated to the public.

"Let us gather every positive story and communicate it to the public through constructive and inspiring narratives. Strong communication helps build public trust while demonstrating the industry's tangible contributions to the nation," he said.

Ditjen Migas KESDM Public Relations Coordinator, Akhmad Fauzi Budiman, expressed his appreciation for the M&E initiative and PHI's performance in supporting national energy security through its strong production achievements. He added that the company's commitment to implementing CID programs demonstrates that the success of the upstream oil and gas industry is measured not only by operational performance but also by its contributions to society.

"We hope this strong synergy will continue to grow, enabling efforts to strengthen national energy security while delivering sustainable benefits to communities and the environment," he stated.

The monitoring visit began at the Sungai Hitam Lestari Ecoriparian Program in Samboja District, approximately 58 kilometers north of Balikpapan. The program, developed by Pertamina EP Sangasanga Field, focuses on conserving the endangered proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) and restoring 120 hectares of mangrove forests. Beyond preserving biodiversity, the initiative absorbs approximately 265.48 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually while improving community livelihoods through ecotourism activities, including river tours, and the development of food and beverage products derived from local resources such as mangroves and nipa palms.

The delegation then visited the Wasteco Program, a flagship CID initiative by PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), which converts methane gas generated from organic waste at the Manggar Final Waste Disposal Site (TPAS) in Balikpapan into an alternative energy source for nearby communities. Since its implementation in 2021, Wasteco has helped more than 380 households reduce monthly LPG expenses, supported the development of community waste banks, and fostered the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that generate additional income and improve local livelihoods. The program has also significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, creating substantial environmental benefits.

PHI believes that harmonious relationships and continuous communication with government institutions, local communities, and all stakeholders will further strengthen support for safe, reliable, and sustainable upstream oil and gas operations while contributing to Indonesia's national energy security.

PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) is part of Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, managing upstream oil and gas operations and businesses across Regional 3 Kalimantan, which comprises Zona 8, Zona 9, and Zona 10, in accordance with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
