Bandung– PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) has achieved a significant milestone in supporting Pertamina's net zero emission policy by surpassing its 2024 decarbonization target. As of October 2024, PHI successfully reduced carbon emissions by 198 Kton CO2e, 44.6% higher than the year-to-date (YTD) target. This achievement demonstrates PHI's commitment to reducing carbon emissions from upstream oil and gas operations and business activities.
In recognition of this accomplishment, PHI received the Excellence Decarbonization Performance award during the Upstream Decarbonization Annual Meeting organized by the Production & Project Function of Subholding Upstream in Bandung on November 20–22, 2024. This success stems from the achievements of its subsidiaries and affiliates across 10 operational areas within Zona 8, Zona 9, and Zona 10.
VP Production & Project at PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Benny Hidajat Sidik, explained that Subholding Upstream had achieved a decarbonization realization of 996 Kton CO2e as of October 2024, with a projected reduction of 1,185 Kton CO2e by the end of the year—more than 110% of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) target. "The net zero emission commitment by 2060, or sooner, is expected to be achieved through decarbonization initiatives such as new technologies (CCS/CCUS), production optimization, electrification to renewable energy, decommissioning, and carbon offsetting or credit purchases," he stated.
PHI and its subsidiaries' decarbonization initiatives indicate an estimated total emission reduction of 42% from the 2024 target, with the projection reaching 233 Kton CO2e by year-end. Strategic initiatives supporting this achievement include utilizing biofuel (Biosolar) for marine fleets in PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) operations, optimizing internal gas usage by PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangatta to enhance operational efficiency, and transitioning from diesel fuel to B35 biofuel for operations and marine transport activities in PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT).
Through these innovative programs, PHI remains committed to developing green businesses. By adopting a sustainable approach, the company contributes to achieving national emission targets and pioneers environmentally friendly energy transformation in the oil and gas sector.
During the same event, the VP of Sustainability Strategy at PT Pertamina (Persero), Suripno, emphasized that Pertamina focuses on balancing the three ESG pillars (Environmental, Social, and Governance) to become a leading global energy company. "Key climate change mitigation efforts include reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, methane emission reduction, zero routine flaring, and utilizing electricity from low-carbon sources," he said.
PHI's achievement in carbon emission reduction serves as tangible proof that green energy transformation in the oil and gas sector can be achieved through sustainable innovation and strategic planning. PHI meets its corporate targets and significantly contributes to the nation's emission reduction goals. This success inspires other industries to adopt similar steps in supporting environmental sustainability and a greener future.
