Instilling Environmental Awareness From an Early Age, PHI Zona 9 Group Holds Beach Clean Action and Plastic Waste Education

Balikpapan – In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) Zona 9 Group conducted a series of educational activities and concrete actions themed "Stop Plastic Pollution." These included a waste sorting awareness campaign involving elementary school students and a beach cleanup at Kilang Mandiri Beach in Balikpapan involving the community.

The waste sorting awareness campaign involved all students from grades 1 to 6 at SDN 026 Central Balikpapan. The event was opened by the Principal of SDN 026, Chandra Ayu Mahdalena, on June 18, 2025. This outreach activity marked the Company's first step in supporting SDN 026 in becoming a National Adiwiyata School by assisting in the form of greenery and educational environmental murals in the school grounds. During this activity, students were introduced to various types of waste—organic, inorganic, and hazardous waste—through educational videos and a waste sorting simulation using colored bins. The event concluded with interactive games and an environmental quiz on plastic reduction, which the students enthusiastically received.

Meanwhile, a beach cleanup at Kilang Mandiri Beach in Balikpapan was held on June 20, 2025, as the culmination of World Environment Day. This activity was carried out in collaboration with the East Kalimantan Provincial Environmental Agency (DLH), the management of Kilang Mandiri Beach, and workers under the auspices of Zona 9: PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tanjung Field, Sangasanga Field, and PEP Sangatta Field.

Zona 9 HSSE Operation Manager, Budiman Sarwidi, expressed the Company's belief that educational and collaborative initiatives like this have a long-term impact in fostering a culture of environmental sustainability. "We hope this activity can instill values of environmental awareness in the younger generation and the general public from an early age," he said.

He believes that community involvement in environmental preservation can begin with simple steps, such as sorting waste and reducing single-use plastic, leading to concrete actions in maintaining clean land and oceans for a better future for the Earth.

The beach cleanup began with a talk show themed "Stop Plastic Pollution" with the Head of the East Kalimantan Provincial Environment Agency, Anwar Sanusi, and continued with a concrete beach cleanup. Nearly 500 kg of waste was collected and delivered to the Golden Waste Bank KM 8 Balikpapan, a waste management partner. The event also featured a theatrical performance by the Mathilda Etam arts group, highlighting the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems.

Dony Indrawan, Manager of Communication Relations & CID PHI, conveyed the Company's commitment to continuing safe, reliable, compliant, and environmentally friendly oil and gas operations by supporting conservation and preservation efforts, such as those at this year's World Environment Day commemoration. "This activity is part of the company's commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, particularly in the environmental aspect, and we encourage every individual to become an agent of change," he explained.

According to Dony, environmental preservation efforts, including managing plastic waste, are not the responsibility of any one party but a shared responsibility. "This activity is part of the Company's commitment to encouraging environmental awareness from an early age and increasing active community involvement in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the ecosystem, particularly from the threat of plastic waste," he concluded.

Zona 9 is part of the Pertamina Upstream Subholding Regional 3 Kalimantan, which is led by PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI). The Company's entities in Zona 9 are Production Sharing Contract Contractors that collaborate with SKK Migas to manage upstream oil and gas operations and businesses by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the Sanga Sanga and Sangatta Working Areas in East Kalimantan and Tanjung in South Kalimantan.
