Balikpapan – To support the smooth flow of national energy supplies, PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT) completed the replacement of the subsea hose at the Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility at the Santan Terminal in East Kalimantan, ahead of schedule. This strategic project was completed to high safety standards without incident and without disrupting ongoing lifting operations, demonstrating PHKT's Competence and operational capabilities in maintaining the reliability of national energy infrastructure.
Zona 10 General Manager, Yoseph Agung Prihartono, emphasized the strategic importance of the Santan SPM in maintaining national energy distribution. "This success not only demonstrates the solidity of project implementation but also forms part of Pertamina's strategic mission to maintain national energy security," he said. The completion of this project marks a significant achievement for PHKT in the first half of 2025.
Subsea hose is a critical link in the oil and gas supply chain, so its successful replacement directly contributes to the reliability of energy distribution from East Kalimantan to various regions in Indonesia. "The successful completion of this project demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the reliability of our oil and gas operating facilities, as a vital part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the Company's reliable and sustainable oil and gas production," said Yoseph.
As a vital facility in the crude oil lifting system in East Kalimantan, the Santan SPM plays a crucial role in supporting national energy distribution. This facility serves oil and gas operations under a Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) with PT Pertamina EP (PEP), PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), and other oil and gas blocks, including those managed by ENI. With this central role, the reliability and safety of SPM operations are top priorities for PHKT. "We believe that with a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and integrity, every step we take in the field contributes significantly to the nation's progress," said Yoseph.
Facing the complexity of subsea work and challenging field conditions, PHKT implemented an innovative work method called "Golden Octopus," an acronym for "Fast Movement, Prioritize Safety, Refurbishment of SPM, Innovation, Technology, and Reliable Process Accuracy," resulting in high-quality work results, resembling gold.
The Octopus philosophy was chosen because it represents the resilience of an octopus, characterized by speed, precision, and adaptability, which enables it to operate effectively under extreme underwater pressure and conditions. This approach allows the entire work sequence, from inspection and draining to subsea hose replacement, to be carried out precisely without disrupting ongoing lifting operations.
Yoseph added that dynamic sea weather, the technical challenges of lifting and installing equipment, and the need to maintain continuous oil delivery to the refinery are all part of the field dynamics that were successfully addressed through solid cross-functional coordination, disciplined risk management, and precise technical execution. Thanks to careful planning, cross-functional collaboration, and strict oversight of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) aspects, PHKT completed this project with zero incidents, five days ahead of the initial target.
In addition to operational achievements, the success of this project reflects the concrete implementation of the AKHLAK values, the foundation of PHKT's work culture: Trustworthiness in maintaining strategic energy facilities, Competence in executing high-standard techniques, Harmony in team synergy, Loyalty to the corporate mission, Adaptiveness in facing challenges, and Collaboration in achieving the best results. This entire process demonstrates that the spirit of collaboration and innovation remains PHKT's primary strength in providing sustainable solutions for the nation.
The success of the "Golden Octopus" method reinforces PHKT and Pertamina's commitment to continuous innovation and maintaining the reliability of national energy infrastructure, thereby achieving safe, efficient, and sustainable oil and gas operations. This achievement is a tangible symbol of PHKT's continued commitment as a prudent oil and gas terminal operator and a leader in national energy security. From the seas of East Kalimantan, the spirit of collaboration and innovation continues to burn brightly, bringing Kalimantan's energy to Indonesia.
