Samarinda – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) symbolically handed over education assistance to representatives of students from 15 universities and representatives of coastal graduates at an event held in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Wednesday (January 21, 2026). The assistance is part of PHM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, namely the Mahakam Education Assistance Program (Program Bantuan Pendidikan Mahakam) and the Coastal Graduate Mentorship Program (Program Pendampingan Sarjana Pesisir). In this phase, 99 beneficiaries received educational support.
The Mahakam Education Assistance Program provides financial support to students pursuing D3/D4/S1 degrees, Linear S1 Teacher programs, and S2 programs from five sub-districts surrounding PHM’s operational areas, particularly those from underprivileged families. Meanwhile, the Coastal Graduate Mentorship Program is aimed at senior high school students and their equivalents from Anggana Sub-district to support their transition to higher education.
The handover ceremony was attended by the Regional Secretary of Kutai Kartanegara, Sunggono; the Head of SKK Migas Representative Office for Kalimantan and Sulawesi, represented by Coordinator of Formalities and Communication Lely M. Sondakh; the Head of the Kutai Kartanegara Education and Culture Office, represented by Secretary of the Education and Culture Office Pujianto; Anggana Sub-district Head Rendra Abadi; Muara Jawa Sub-district Head Muhammad Ramli; Samboja Sub-district Head Damsik; Muara Badak Sub-district Head, represented by Head of Community Empowerment Section Neneng Sri Yulianti; Sanga-Sanga Sub-district Head M. Dachriansyah; as well as the Acting General Manager of PHM, represented by Senior Manager Subsurface Development & Planning Susan Syahdina.
On that occasion, representing the Acting General Manager of PHM, Susan Syahdina stated that the Mahakam Education Assistance and Coastal Graduate Mentorship programs are part of the Company’s commitment to developing the younger generation in its operational areas through CSR programs carried out annually.
According to her, the programs have provided sustainable benefits to the community, particularly underprivileged families around the Company’s operational areas. The programs are supported by SKK Migas and PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) as the parent company. “We implement CSR programs, especially in education, aimed at supporting government programs to improve the quality and capacity of human resources, particularly the younger generation, around the Company’s operational areas,” said Susan.
She added that the Company’s CSR programs are intended to support achievements in the education sector, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 4, namely inclusive and equitable quality education. Susan also revealed that in 2025, the Mahakam Education Assistance and Coastal Graduate Scholarships were awarded to 19 recipients in Samboja Sub-district, 37 in Muara Jawa, 5 in Sanga-Sanga, 28 in Anggana, and 10 in Muara Badak, totaling 15 universities in Samarinda, Balikpapan, and Tenggarong. Thus, since the program was initiated and implemented from 2018 to 2025, the total number of beneficiaries has exceeded 700 students.
Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary of Kutai Kartanegara, Sunggono, expressed appreciation for PHM’s consistency in delivering education programs, which represent one of the most promising investments for the future. He also motivated the beneficiaries not to waste the opportunity provided by PHM by studying diligently, maintaining good conduct, and continuing to nurture the spirit to progress.
The Coordinator of Formalities and Communication of SKK Migas for the Kalimantan and Sulawesi Region, Lely M. Sondakh, stated that the Mahakam Education Assistance is a tangible manifestation of the upstream oil and gas industry’s commitment to supporting sustainable development, particularly in the field of education. Synergy between regional governments, educational institutions, and the upstream oil and gas industry must continue to be strengthened to produce a superior, competitive, and environmentally conscious younger generation to realize sustainable development, especially in East Kalimantan.
Meanwhile, Manager Communication, Relations & CID of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia, Dony Indrawan, conveyed the Company’s commitment to continue supporting community capacity development and independence, particularly in education. “Limited access to quality higher education remains a challenge for underprivileged families around the Company’s operational areas, including in the operational areas of PHM, PHSS, and PHKT. Economic factors, geographical limitations, and socio-cultural conditions cause many high school graduates to be unable to continue their education at higher education institutions,” he explained.
For this reason, in addition to the Mahakam Education Assistance Program, PHI, together with its subsidiaries, including PHM, provides access to the best students from underprivileged families in Kalimantan to obtain full scholarships through the Beasiswa Sobat Bumi Kalimantan (BSBK) Program. “We believe that the Mahakam Education Assistance Program and BSBK will open wider opportunities for young generations in our operational areas to pursue education at quality higher education institutions, while preparing them as agents of change for regional development and economic progress,” he added.
Dony explained that these CSR programs in the field of education are also part of efforts to build harmonious relationships with communities to support the sustainability of the Company’s oil and gas operations and production, which are vital for national energy security in line with the government’s Asta Cita agenda.
