Various Innovations and Technologies Support PHI Group in Zona 9 to Surpass 2025 Oil and Gas Production Target

Various Innovations and Technologies Support PHI Group in Zona 9 to Surpass 2025 Oil and Gas Production Target

Balikpapan – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), through PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tanjung Field, PEP Sangasanga Field, and PEP Sangatta Field, recorded oil and gas production realization exceeding the 2025 target. These four subsidiaries and affiliates of PHI in Zona 9 achieved oil production of 22.6 thousand barrels of oil per day (MBOPD), while gas production reached 105.369 million standard cubic feet per day (MMCFD).

This achievement positions Zona 9 as one of the main contributors to PHI–Regional 3 Kalimantan's production, while reflecting the Company's consistent support for national energy security in line with the Government of Indonesia's Asta Cita agenda.

Senior Manager Subsurface Development & Planning (SSDP) Zona 9, Supriady, emphasized that the positive production performance reflects the Company's commitment to implementing innovations and technologies to manage mature oil and gas fields with complex characteristics that require precise strategies and close cross-functional coordination. "We believe innovation and technology play a strategic role in maintaining recovery levels and sustaining production in mature oil and gas fields," he said.

According to him, this success is the result of strong collaboration between all workers and management in managing subsurface assets through the application of fit-for-purpose technologies. As a source of motivation, Supriady and his team carry the slogan "Anti Decline," reflecting their commitment to preventing production decline.

He added that in Zona 9, the Company consistently promotes the adoption of best-practice technologies across all aspects of operations and business in the national and global upstream oil and gas industry. Technological support enables the Company to manage operations efficiently and adaptively, with a focus on achieving sustainable production targets. "These efforts are accompanied by consistent human capital competency development," he added.

For example, PHSS has implemented the Through Tubing Electric Submersible Pump (TTESP) innovation as an efficient solution to increase well production by up to 150 percent. Although currently applied in four wells, this breakthrough has made a significant contribution to oil production. In addition, the Pertasolvent technology has increased well production by nearly 4 times compared to initial conditions. Pertasolvent is a type of solvent used to address High Pour Point Oil (HPPO) issues, where the produced oil has a pour point higher than the pipeline operating temperature. This technology has been applied in the Mutiara and Pamaguan Fields. For gas production, PHSS has implemented Capillary String technology, which reduces potential flow disruptions and improves production stability by approximately 0.36 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd).

Meanwhile, PEP Sangasanga has applied the Wellhead Compressor Mini Gas Compressor to borderless wells, i.e., wells that overlap with other Pertamina working areas or entities. This innovation has increased production from low-pressure wells by up to 15 times compared to initial conditions. In the TSS field, gas production stability reached 117 percent of the 2025 target.

Operationally, performance has been supported by accelerated drilling schedules and well interventions while maintaining a strong focus on occupational safety and environmental protection. "An integrated upstream oil and gas operational approach and a strengthened safety culture form the foundation for sustaining the performance of PHSS and PEP in Zona 9 in supporting national energy security," he concluded.

PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) is part of Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, which manages upstream oil and gas operations and businesses in Regional 3, Kalimantan, covering Zona 8, 9, and 10, in accordance with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to achieve its vision of becoming a world-class oil and gas company. Through its subsidiaries and affiliates, in collaboration with SKK Migas, PHI implements innovative Corporate Social Responsibility programs in the areas of economy, education, health, environment, infrastructure, and disaster response. These initiatives support the sustainability of national oil and gas production and realize #EnergiKalimantanUntukIndonesia. PHI is headquartered in Jakarta.
