Kutai Kartanegara– PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), has successfully increased its oil and gas production through the drilling of the Mutiara-351 and Mutiara-352 wells in the Sungai Dondang area, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan Province. These two wells have significantly boosted production in the Sanga Sanga Field, increasing from 6,800 barrels of oil per day (bopd) in early November 2024 to 8,600 bopd by the end of the same month. This achievement contributes directly to the national oil and gas production targets and Indonesia's energy security.
The Mutiara-351 well has recorded a potential oil production rate of 1,184 bopd and gas production of 0.221 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd). This success was followed by the Mutiara-352 well, which delivered 1,100 bopd and 0.229 mmscfd of gas during the first perforation of one of its strings in early November 2024. All produced fluids are water-free, indicating an ideal reservoir quality for oil and dry gas production.
Magfirah Rajab, Manager of Subsurface Development for Area 1, Zona 9 of Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, explained that the high Flowing Tubing Head Pressure (FTHP) reflects sufficient reservoir energy to push fluids without mechanical assistance. "With the high FTHP, the reservoir is capable of pushing fluids to the surface without the need for pumps or other mechanical equipment," she said.
According to Magfirah, this achievement results from a concerted effort by all parties to implement best practices in upstream oil and gas project management. "At PHSS, we employ a strategic approach to selecting oil and gas projects that offer the best return on investment, aligned with the business conditions and operational challenges in the field," she added.
Supriady, Senior Manager of Subsurface Development & Planning for Zona 9, added that this strategy is part of the company's commitment to maintaining production in mature fields. "We remain committed to continued investment in exploration and exploitation drilling to support Indonesia's oil and gas production targets for 2030 while ensuring sustainable production in mature fields," he explained.
The Mutiara-351 well uses a choke size of 26/64" to 28/64" to regulate fluid flow and maintain pressure stability. The Flowing Tubing Head Pressure (FTHP) was recorded at up to 270 psi, while the Flowline Pressure (FLP) was measured at 125 psi. These parameters ensure smooth fluid flow from the reservoir to the surface without significant obstacles.
In addition to drilling, PHSS has conducted reservoir potential studies in the previously undeveloped Sungai Dondang area. These studies have opened up new opportunities for further exploration in the region.
Beyond production, Elis Fauziyah, Head of Communication Relations & CID for Zona 9, emphasized that the company implements innovative and sustainable community development programs. "We believe that a harmonious relationship with the local communities in our operational areas supports the success and sustainability of our operations and business," said Elis.
