Promoting Sustainable Livestock Farming, PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur Trains Villagers in Organic Farming and Alternative Feed Processing

Marangkayu, East Kalimantan – PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT) conducted an Organic Livestock Farming and Alternative Feed Production Training for the residents of Sebuntal Village, Marangkayu, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, on January 25–26, 2025. The event, held at the Koloni Balai Larva Secretariat, aimed to enrich the knowledge and enhance the skills of the villagers—particularly members of the Koloni Balai Larva (KOBAR) group—in managing environmentally friendly and sustainable livestock farming.

Head of Communication, Relations & CID Zona 10, Dharma Saputra, highlighted that this collaboration between the community and the company is expected to support government policies in strengthening food self-sufficiency through a more innovative and independent livestock sector. "With a spirit of collaboration and innovation, initiatives like this are expected to grow and provide long-term benefits for the people of Sebuntal Village and its surroundings," he explained.

According to Dharma, PHKT seeks to enhance local farmers' capacity through this training and reaffirms its commitment to supporting more sustainable agricultural and livestock practices. "We hope that the knowledge and skills gained from this training can be applied effectively, fostering independence in alternative feed production and creating a more efficient and environmentally friendly livestock system," he added.

The training was attended by 12 participants from Sebuntal Village, where Koloni Balai Larva has developed poultry farming and catfish cultivation as part of their sustainable agribusiness initiatives.

The session was led by Ludy Kristanto, a Senior Agricultural Extension Officer from the Kalimantan Timur Agricultural Instrument Standardization Agency. He covered topics on livestock maintenance techniques, market potential analysis, and the production of age- and species-appropriate alternative feeds. Ludy introduced the concept of organic farming, emphasizing product quality, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare. Additionally, he provided in-depth guidance on selecting the right raw materials and formulating efficient and nutritious feed.

Ludy also introduced techniques for producing alternative feed using local, cost-effective ingredients, reducing dependence on commercial feed. During the interactive discussion sessions, participants shared their experiences in livestock farming and worked together to develop solutions to common challenges. This approach is expected to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of their farming ventures.

As the training facilitator, Ludy expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm, dedication, and curiosity of the KOBAR members. "I am delighted to see the participants' commitment to learning and innovation. I hope this program will continue so farmers can implement more environmentally friendly farming methods," he said.

Ludy further noted that if properly applied, alternative feed production could gradually reduce operational costs by up to 50%, enabling farmers in Sebuntal Village to expand their livestock production scale.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Production at Santan Terminal PHKT, Binto Iskandar, reaffirmed the company's commitment to implementing impactful and sustainable social and environmental innovations. "We will continue investing in innovative community development programs that enhance self-sufficiency and environmental conservation," he stated.

Binto hopes that KOBAR will maintain its spirit and consistency in developing its livestock programs while expanding its benefits to a broader community. Looking ahead, we hope farmers will no longer rely on commercial feed but achieve self-sufficiency in managing eco-friendly farms and producing cost-effective, sustainable alternative feed.
