Balikpapan – PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), successfully recorded solid oil and gas production performance throughout the first half of 2025. PHSS's oil and gas production showed an upward trend from the beginning to the middle of this year.
Oil production increased from 12,500 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) in January to 13,400 BOPD at the end of June 2025, representing an approximately 7.2% increase. Meanwhile, natural gas production increased from 86.79 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) to 98.43 MMSCFD, representing a rise of approximately 13.4 percent over the same period.
PHI President Director, Sunaryanto, stated that PHSS's achievements reflect the Company's confidence in implementing appropriate business strategies, along with innovation and technology, which play a critical role in maintaining the sustainability of the Company's oil and gas production. "PHSS's achievements align with the commitment of PHI, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), and PT Pertamina (Persero) to provide sustainable energy for Indonesia's development and future," explained Anto, Sunaryanto's nickname.
He explained that this positive trend is the result of the Company's integrated strategy, which includes optimizing production baselines, implementing well workover programs, and implementing new drilling in a disciplined manner. "We are implementing a borderless strategy in oil and gas well drilling activities in overlapping working areas in Kalimantan, thereby opening up investment opportunities that can generate value for all stakeholders," he said.
For example, the synergy between PHSS and PEP Sangasanga allows for integrated production operations in the North Kutai Lama (NKL) and Samboja regions of East Kalimantan. This cross-regional approach enables the utilization of shared production facilities, reduces duplication of investment and operational costs, and enhances the flexibility and reliability of the production chain. This efficiency is further enhanced through the L-805U reverse borderless project, which optimizes gas and liquid flow between the PHSS and PEP facilities, reducing gas lift consumption and opening up opportunities for well reactivation activities at Lampake.
PHSS is also strengthening the implementation of various technological innovations to support operational efficiency and sustainability. One leading innovation that has made a significant contribution is the use of the Monobore Pump, a slim-hole Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) technology that can be installed in 3.5-inch diameter tubing without the use of a rig (rigless). This technology enables the reactivation of idle wells and production optimization without the need for a rig, achieving optimal time and cost efficiency. Furthermore, a capillary string inserts a small tube into the well to deliver a liquid foaming agent (surfactant). This reacts with the liquid (water) that has settled in the well into a lighter phase (foam), thereby reducing the liquid water column and allowing gas production to resume. This technology significantly helps restore well productivity.
In addition to increased production performance, PHSS has also achieved notable improvements in occupational safety and operational efficiency. By the end of the second quarter of 2025, the Company recorded zero recordable incidents, with 42,451,123 safe working hours. Its commitment to process safety is also demonstrated by achieving the 2024 PSAIMS (Process Safety & Asset Integrity Management System) audit at the PHSS Mutiara field, which earned an overall dark green rating. This is strong evidence that safety remains a priority in all operational activities.
PHSS management and supervisors actively act as HSSE role models to instill a culture of safety throughout the organization. Consistent leadership, direct involvement in the field, and strict oversight of personnel competency are key factors in maintaining the Company's operational integrity.
Entering the second half of the year, PHSS is committed to continuing proven initiatives, while strengthening its operational foundation and expanding the application of technical innovations. With strong fundamentals and an integrated innovation portfolio, PHSS is optimistic that it can continue to increase its contribution to supporting the achievement of Pertamina Subholding Upstream's sustainable production targets by 2025.
