Balikpapan– To commemorate World Environment Day, PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), through its subsidiaries and affiliates, planted 1,200 Rhizophora SP mangrove seedlings around the company's operational areas in East Kalimantan. This initiative supports environmental conservation efforts and aligns with the company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions towards net zero emissions by 2060 and Pertamina's energy transition policy.
The mangrove seedling planting activity is carried out by PHI's subsidiaries and affiliates in Zona 9, namely PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga Sanga (PHSS), PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tanjung Field, PEP Sangasanga Field, and PEP Sangatta Field. The planting of 1,000 seedlings took place at Lamaru Beach in Balikpapan on June 11, 2024, while the remaining 200 seedlings were planted in Teluk Lombok Village, South Sangatta, two days later. If these mangrove seedlings grow, they are estimated to contribute to a reduction of approximately 1,537.3416 tons of CO2 eq in carbon emissions.
Ade Diar Suhendar, Acting General Manager of Zona 9 Subholding Upstream Pertamina, emphasized that environmental conservation and management are among the company's primary focuses as a commitment to conducting environmentally friendly upstream oil and gas operations. "We implement various environmental management programs to support the company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation, as well as supporting Pertamina's energy transition policy and net zero emissions by 2060," explained Ade.
Representatives from the Balikpapan Environmental Service (DLH), the Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) of Balikpapan Botanical Gardens, the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) Kalimantan Sulawesi (Kalsul), and the Air and Water Police Corps (Korpolairud) attended the mangrove seedling planting event on June 11, 2024.
Participants in the mangrove seedling planting event also received education about mangrove plants from Bripka Taufik Ismail, representing PS Panit 2 Binmas Air and Potdirga Directorate of Water and Air Police (Ditpolairud) East Kalimantan Police. "Mangroves play a vital role as they serve as habitats for plants and animals, carbon sinks and storage, and pollutant absorbers. The planting of 1,000 seedlings expects to provide long-term contributions and set an example for future carbon emission reduction efforts," he explained.
As part of this year's World Environment Day celebration, the company organized a Reels video-making competition on Instagram, themed around the climate crisis with the hashtag #GenerationRestoration. The competition aims to encourage the public to participate in protecting nature and preserving the environment. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5.
