Commemorating Earth Day 2026, PT Pertamina EP Sangatta Field Conducts Tree Planting and Plastic Waste Reduction Initiatives

Kutai Timur – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangatta Field carried out an Earth Care Action through a tree planting activity in the ST-220 operational area, Silvaduta Hamlet, South Sangatta, Kutai Timur Regency, on 15 April 2026. The tree-planting activity involved various stakeholders, including the Kutai National Park Agency, the Kutai Timur Police Resort (Polres), the Military District Command (Kodim 0909 Kutai Timur), the Sangatta Naval Base (Lanal), the sub-district and village governments of South Sangatta, and the local community. The activity, themed "Pertamina's Green Collaboration for a Sustainable Earth through Tree Planting: Realizing Small Investments for Greater Impact," was organized in anticipation of Earth Day 2026, which is commemorated annually on 22 April.

In this activity, PEP Sangatta Field planted 333 trees, comprising various land plant species, including mahang damar, meranti, laban, trembesi, mahogany, and ulin. These tree species were selected due to their high capacity to absorb carbon emissions. A mature trembesi tree, for example, can absorb up to approximately 28.5 tons of CO₂ per year, thereby supporting carbon emission reduction efforts.

This Earth Care Action was not limited to tree planting; it also included environmental education for participants through campaigns to reduce plastic waste, the implementation of environmentally friendly catering practices, and the encouragement of the use of personal reusable water bottles in daily activities.

Acting Field Manager of PEP Sangatta Field, Radhintya Danas, expressed the Company's commitment to continuously contribute to environmental preservation, particularly in supporting national greening movements. "This Earth Care Action is an important step in fostering collective awareness of the importance of protecting the environment," he stated.

According to him, through this activity, PEP Sangatta Field contributes to creating a greener environment around the Company's operational area, as part of a strategic effort to conduct safe, reliable, compliant, and environmentally friendly upstream oil and gas operations. "Tree planting will support environmental sustainability for the community and create a better future for the next generations," he added.

Appreciation was also expressed by the Head of South Sangatta Sub-district, Dewi, who regarded the activity as a tangible step in preserving environmental sustainability. "I highly appreciate the tree planting initiative carried out by PEP Sangatta Field. Not all institutions commemorate Earth Day, but today it is proven through Pertamina's real contribution in protecting the environment. We also appreciate the efforts to reduce plastic waste in this activity," she said.

Meanwhile, the Manager of Communication Relations & CID at PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia, Dony Indrawan, emphasized the Company's belief that biodiversity protection and environmental awareness are fundamental to supporting Indonesia's future sustainability policies. "This program is one of the initiatives we implement as part of our commitment to applying sustainability principles in supporting safe, reliable, environmentally friendly, and compliant upstream oil and gas operations," he explained.

According to Dony, PHI and its subsidiaries and affiliates, including PEP Sangatta Field, continue to collaborate with local governments and communities surrounding the Company's operational areas to preserve the environment through tree-planting and waste-management initiatives. "Over the past five years, we have planted more than 600,000 trees, including mangroves, endemic Kalimantan species, and fruit trees around our upstream oil and gas operational areas in Kalimantan, to support flora and fauna conservation as well as carbon emission reduction," he added.

Through this activity, PEP Sangatta Field continues to deliver long-term environmental preservation initiatives while strengthening synergy among the Company, the government, and the community to maintain ecosystem sustainability in its operational areas.
