Sepinggan V-7 Well Optimization Enables PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur to Exceed Oil and Gas Production Targets

Sepinggan V-7 Well Optimization Enables PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur to Exceed Oil and Gas Production Targets

Balikpapan – PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT)'s consistent efforts to optimize production from existing oil and gas wells have yielded positive results through the successful optimization of the Sepinggan V-7 Well, with oil production reaching 710 barrels of oil per day (BOPD), more than double the established target. In addition to oil, the Sepinggan V-7 Well also produces approximately 0.8 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD), exceeding the initial target of 0.5 MMSCFD (September 4, 2026).

General Manager Zona 10 PHKT, Darmapala, said this achievement was made possible by optimizing an existing well and restoring access to a potential production zone in the Sepinggan V-7 Well, which had previously been underutilized. "Optimizing existing oil and gas wells is one of PHKT's strategies to maintain and increase production by maximizing the potential of assets that have been operating for decades and have reached maturity. We continuously evaluate development opportunities while taking into account safety, effectiveness, efficiency, and operational reliability," he explained.

According to Darmapala, this achievement offers renewed optimism that existing assets can still deliver additional production when managed with the right strategy. "Through the right strategy, the production potential of the V-7 Well has been successfully restored and developed to contribute to the sustainability of PHKT's oil and gas production, in line with the vision and mission of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI), as the parent company, to continue contributing to Indonesia's energy availability and security," Darmapala said.

The optimization project began with a fishing operation to remove obstructions within the well. After successfully restoring access to a potential production zone at a depth of approximately 13,000 feet, PHKT proceeded with workover (WO) operations and perforation activities in a different formation considered to have production potential. The results showed a positive response. Based on production testing conducted on September 1, 2026, the V-7 Well recorded oil and gas production that exceeded initial expectations.

Head of SKK Migas Kalimantan and Sulawesi Representative Office, Haryanto Syafri, welcomed PHKT's success in increasing oil and gas production from the Sepinggan V-7 Well. He said this achievement shows there are still opportunities to increase production by optimizing existing assets. "We appreciate PHKT's efforts to optimize the Sepinggan V-7 Well, enabling it to achieve production levels above the established target," Haryanto stated.

According to Haryanto, this achievement reflects PHKT's ability to identify existing potential and carry out operations effectively, allowing existing assets to continue providing meaningful additional production.

He said he hoped this achievement would motivate PHKT to keep identifying opportunities to increase production from existing assets, particularly in Kalimantan. "Moving forward, we will continue to encourage initiatives such as this. We hope that more potential can be optimized to make a greater contribution to sustainable oil and gas production in meeting national energy needs," Haryanto added.

The success of the V-7 Well also shows how technology, technical expertise, and cross-functional collaboration can unlock production potential from wells that were previously underutilized. In line with PHI's commitment, PHKT continues to invest in oil and gas exploitation activities to increase reserves, improve recovery rates, and maintain oil and gas production levels.
