Supporting Environmental Protection, PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur Collaborates for Sustainable Coastal and Marine Spatial Management

Samarinda - As part of its commitment to environmentally responsible oil and gas operations, PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT) has partnered with the East Kalimantan Marine and Fisheries Agency/Dinas Kelautan dan Perikanan (DKP) to hold a workshop titled Sustainable Management of Marine Spatial Areas and Conservation Zones. This initiative marks a tangible step in building collaboration to strengthen the national energy sector while prioritizing integrated and sustainable marine spatial planning.

Head of Marine Spatial Management at East Kalimantan’s DKP, Mohamad Ali Aripe, emphasized the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems. “East Kalimantan has vast marine and coastal resources, with a rich variety of ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and marine mammals. Rare species like whale sharks have been found in this region,” he stated during the workshop held in Samarinda in late February.

The workshop aimed to deepen understanding of environmentally friendly governance of marine and coastal areas, while also considering local communities' economic and social interests. Discussions highlighted integrating ecological, economic, social, and cultural aspects to maintain natural balance and support sustainable development.

Head of Communication Relations & CID for Zona 10 at PHKT, Dharma Saputra, emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration to support national energy security. “Successful management of natural resources cannot be done in isolation. The upstream oil and gas industry plays a critical role in supplying energy for Indonesia and must be supported by all stakeholders to help achieve national energy self-sufficiency, in line with the Asta Cita vision set by the Indonesian government,” he said.

Dharma added that the workshop is expected to generate practical solutions and strengthen synergies between the upstream oil and gas industry and stakeholders in preserving marine ecosystems. “PHKT’s offshore operations require strong support from all parties to be carried out safely, reliably, in compliance, and in an environmentally friendly way. Workshops like this foster a shared understanding of strategic steps needed to achieve that goal,” he explained.

He also noted that PHKT consistently applies industry best practices and ensures its production facilities remain reliable and efficient. The company continues to adopt innovative technologies to maintain sustainable oil and gas production from the Kalimantan region.
