East Kutai – PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Sangatta Field organized a household fire safety awareness program for residents of Sangkima Village, South Sangatta District, East Kutai Regency, at the end of July. The initiative aimed to strengthen community safety around the Company’s operational area by equipping residents with knowledge and practical skills to handle household fire incidents.
The program took place on July 28, 2025, at the Sangkima Village Community Hall and was attended by representatives from the village government, Family Welfare Movement (PKK), Posyandu cadres, neighborhood and hamlet heads, Babinsa, and students from Universitas Mulawarman’s Bina Desa community service program.
Cahyo Nugroho, Field Manager of PEP Sangatta Field, reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to supporting government and community efforts in building safer environments. “This program is designed to provide residents with understanding and practical skills in household fire prevention and mitigation. We hope the knowledge gained can be shared with neighbors, relatives, and family members, helping to strengthen community preparedness,” he said.
He added that the high risk of fire incidents in residential areas underlined the importance of this initiative. “By participating in this training, residents are expected to understand preventive measures and proper response steps in the event of a fire. This not only helps avoid incidents but also minimizes broader impacts on the community and the environment,” Cahyo explained.
The main session, delivered by the PEP Sangatta Field HSSE Emergency Fireman Team, covered the characteristics of fire, extinguishing methods, and both tactical and strategic approaches to handling fire incidents. The program also featured a presentation by Universitas Mulawarman students, introducing an innovation for a simple liquid-based fire extinguisher (APAR Cair Sederhana), which can serve as a practical alternative for small-scale household use.
Following the presentations, participants engaged in hands-on training, including fire blanket drills with the HSSE team and practice in using the liquid-based extinguisher guided by the students. This practical approach gave residents direct experience in handling fire emergencies.
Surati, one of the participants, expressed appreciation for the initiative. “Alhamdulillah, today’s program went smoothly. We learned how to practice fire extinguishing and even how to create a liquid extinguisher from household materials that can be used in case of fire. Hopefully, this kind of training will continue to be held in the future. Thank you to PEP Sangatta Field,” she said.
Sangkima Village Head, Muhammad Alwi, also welcomed the program. “With this training, our residents now know the theory of fire safety and can also act during an emergency. This greatly helps reduce the potential for household fires,” he stated.
Through this activity, PEP Sangatta Field aims to promote disaster preparedness and foster a culture of safety within the community, reducing the risk of fire incidents in residential areas.
