Kutai Kartanegara – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) received a working visit from the newly appointed Director of Development and Production of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Mery Luciawaty, to the Senipah Peciko and South Mahakam (SPS) oil and gas production field in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, on July 31. The visit formed part of a strategic work agenda to ensure that all operational activities consistently prioritize HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, and Environment) aspects and implement good governance practices to support sustainable oil and gas production and national energy security.
Mery Luciawaty expressed her appreciation for the performance of the SPS Field team, who have demonstrated effective production and operational facility management. “This visit is not merely about supervision, but also serves as a means to provide recognition and encouragement to frontline workers. We must ensure that every production step always prioritizes safety, efficiency, and sustainability,” she stated.
Mery added that PHE, as Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding together with its subsidiaries and affiliates, fully supports the Government of Indonesia’s target of achieving one million barrels per day as part of realizing the Asta Cita agenda on national energy security and independence. This visit reinforced PHE’s commitment to actively and integratively support resilient, adaptive, and sustainable upstream oil and gas operations.
In addition to the direct inspection of production facilities, the working visit also discussed technical aspects of operational challenges, energy efficiency initiatives, and long-term field development potential. General Manager of PHM, Setyo Sapto Edi, explained that among the seven fields operated by PHM, the SPS Field holds locational advantages. “Accessibility is one of the key considerations in our project portfolio management strategy. PHM applies a strategic approach in selecting oil and gas projects that can deliver the best return on investment, in line with actual conditions as well as business and operational challenges in the field,” he said.
PHM, as one of the backbones of national gas production, continues to carry out various innovations in managing mature oil and gas fields while maintaining reliable and safe production performance. The SPS Field remains one of the key pillars in supporting production targets and contributing to national energy security. SPS is also one of the fields closest to Balikpapan, with a travel time of only about 1.5 to 2 hours, while other fields are located further away and require a combination of land, sea, or air transportation.
