Development of Akar Basah and Kubedistik CSR Programs at Correctional Institution in Nunukan Gains Attention from PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia

North Kalimantan – The management of PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) visited the implementation site of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs at the Nunukan Correctional Institution, North Kalimantan, on September 15, 2025. The visit was part of PHI’s regular monitoring and evaluation activities to ensure the success, sustainability, and positive impact of the company’s CSR programs for the beneficiary communities.

The visit was led by PHI Sr. Manager Relations, Handri Ramdhani, and attended by representatives from the Communication Relations & CID (CRC) Function at PHI Headquarters in Jakarta, as well as the Heads of CRC for Zona 8, 9, and 10, and CSR program coordinators from those zones. During the visit, PHI management engaged in a dialogue with beneficiaries and officials from the correctional institution about the development of the Aliansi Kerja Bebas Sampah (Akar Basah) Program and the Kelompok Usaha Bersama Disabilitas Batik (Kubedistik) Program, both implemented at the institution.

Handri explained that the visit provided a valuable opportunity for management to ensure CSR programs are being carried out as planned, identify challenges, and gather feedback for continuous improvement. “This visit reflects our commitment to ensure that PHI’s upstream oil and gas operations contribute to economic growth, community empowerment, and environmental preservation through CSR programs that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.

He added that the company remains committed to implementing its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs as part of good corporate governance (GCG) and the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

At the Nunukan Correctional Institution, PHI through PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tarakan Field collaborates with the institution’s management to develop and replicate the Kubedistik Program. The initiative helps inmates improve their batik-making skills better to prepare them for a productive life after release. During the visit, the PHI management team observed batik products created by the participants, ranging from fabrics and clothing to decorative wall art, and spoke with one of the inmates involved in the program. The team also visited the local hero of the Kubedistik Program in Tarakan City on Friday, September 19, 2025.

During the discussion with the institution’s head and staff, Dony Indrawan, the PHI Manager of Communication Relations & CID, expressed appreciation for the strong collaboration and support in implementing the CSR programs involving inmates. “We will continue to explore opportunities to expand CSR programs that strengthen the capacity and independence of inmates as they reintegrate into society,” he said.

In addition to the Kubedistik Program, PEP Tarakan Field has also developed the Akar Basah Program at the same facility. This program focuses on waste sorting, management, and recycling plastic waste into valuable products, such as paving blocks now used around the institution’s yard. The Akar Basah Program was initially launched to address plastic bottle pollution in Nunukan, a key seaweed farming area. Through this initiative, used plastic bottles are transformed into more durable and eco-friendly seaweed cultivation media, reducing plastic waste in the region. “The Akar Basah Program has successfully raised public awareness about waste management and encouraged communities to turn waste into valuable economic products while reducing plastic waste in the area,” Dony added.

He also emphasized that, in line with the sustainability policies of Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) and PT Pertamina (Persero), PHI is committed to running low-carbon upstream oil and gas operations to support Indonesia’s net-zero emission target by 2060 or sooner. “Through the Akar Basah and Kubedistik Programs, we strive to reduce carbon emissions, promote waste management, and empower communities to utilize local potential, such as recycled materials and traditional Kalimantan batik motifs, to improve productivity and economic well-being,” he concluded.
