Maternal and child health is an essential element in creating a healthy society and a better future. Therefore, we establish various CSR programs in the health sector that can improve the quality of maternal and child health.
INTEGRATED STUNTING PREVENTION PROGRAM
In the majority of our operational areas, stunting is one of the most prevalent health problem with significant number of cases. To prevent the increasing number of stunting and this condition from affecting even more children, we have started a CSR program that focuses on revitalizing centers for maternal and child health (posyandu) through various activities and in synergy with local communities and the government. In this program, we conduct training for the centers’ volunteers in villages around our working areas. We also provide ‘Posyandu Kits’ to replace old equipment used by the centers and to ensure they can keep running optimally. We are also involved in supplementary feeding program to improve the nutritional status of infants and young children. By these efforts, in 2020, one of the sub-districts of the Company’s working areas, stunting cases were no longer found.
Moreover, we also develop a longer-term stunting prevention program, period 2019-2023. PETISI, or the Integrated Stunting Prevention Program, is claimed to be a pioneering program, the first stunting-eradication program implemented at the international level by an oil and gas company. In realizing the program, the Company takes strategic problem-solving steps. We identify social factors that contribute to stunting, including economic and agricultural policies, health services, education, community culture, sanitation, and the environment. We then develop our focus areas on stunting reduction, namely sanitation, health services, education, and culture in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM
Public health condition is also greatly influenced by the availability of clean and safe water for consumption. However, this remains a problem around the areas where the Company operates. Seeing the condition has encouraged us to develop a Water Supply System together with local Goverment and communities. This program started in 2016 and continues to be ongoing until today. Currently, more than 400 houses have access to clean and safe water. Not only that, from previously spending around Rp100,000 per month for water, they now only spend Rp40,000 per month. They can also be more productive, as they no longer need to wait for the water to clear up until late at night.
BERKAH AIR DONDANG PROGRAM
Clean water is a primary concern for communities that rely on rainwater and water collection wells. With limited water, particularly during the dry season, families are forced to buy clean water at a high price. For this reason, the Company and the community has initiated the “Berkah Air Dondang” CSR program, which has succeeded in overcoming structural problems by contributing to the construction of wellbores, pipelines, water pumps, and storage tanks.
To ensure the clean water program can be sustainable, the Company provides assistance to Dondang Clean Water Management Agency (BPAB) and Dondang Village Goverment by conserving land and growing plants around the wells and the clean water tanks. Significant benefits of the program are felt by the community: there is enough water to supply more than 2,500 people, less money spent on water from around Rp400 thousand per month to around Rp100 thousand per month, less fossil fuel consumption by water vendors, and seventy-five percent lower disease rate caused by water hygiene problems. Today, not only families can avoid paying high prices for water, they are also able to practice clean and healthy lifestyles.
