Supporting Environmental Sustainability, PT Pertamina EP Bunyu Field Conducts a Coastal Cleanup Against Plastic Waste

Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan– PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Bunyu Field organized a coastal cleanup and a campaign to reduce single-use plastic items at Nibung Beach in Bunyu Timur Village, Bunyu District, Bulungan, North Kalimantan, on February 21, 2025.

The Coastal Cleanup event involved approximately 300 participants, including PEP Bunyu employees and stakeholders from the Company's operational area, such as the Military Rayon Command/Komando Rayon Militer (Koramil), Sector Police/Polisi Sektor (Polsek), Navy Post/Pos Angkatan Laut (POSAL), representatives from Bunyu District, Bunyu Barat Village, Bunyu Timur Village, Bunyu Selatan Village, and the Port Administration Unit Office/Kantor Unit Penyelenggara Pelabuhan (KUPP). About 90 percent of the collected waste consisted of plastic, weighing 619.9 kg, which will be recycled into paving blocks. Most plastic waste originates from land-based activities, contributing to marine pollution.

In his speech, Despredi Akbar, Senior Manager of PEP Bunyu Field, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining environmental cleanliness. "This Coastal Cleanup activity serves as a reminder that we must be responsible for the waste we generate," he stated.

According to Despredi, this initiative reflects the Company's commitment to environmental sustainability through efforts to maintain coastal cleanliness and reduce the impact of plastic waste in the ocean.

Despredi added that waste management can start with small actions in everyday life, such as disposing of waste properly, adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle by using tumblers and tote bags, and selecting products based on needs and quality to minimize waste.

"In line with the Company's commitment to conducting environmentally friendly oil and gas operations, PEP Bunyu Field will continue to promote similar programs to create a cleaner and healthier ecosystem for the community. One such effort includes distributing tumblers to employees and partners to reduce plastic bottle waste," he added.

A representative from Bunyu District, Harry P, expressed his appreciation for the initiative by PEP Bunyu Field. "I would like to thank PT Pertamina EP Bunyu Field for organizing the Coastal Cleanup. We hope this activity will continue with broader community involvement because maintaining beach cleanliness is a shared responsibility. A clean beach not only benefits the environment but can also become a tourist attraction for the community," said Harry.

The Coastal Cleanup and Plastic Reduction campaign improved beach cleanliness and provided environmental education to the community and employees. PEP Bunyu Field hopes this initiative will inspire various parties to become more environmentally conscious and adopt sustainable living practices.

Meanwhile, Arya, a Navy Post/Perwakilan Pos Angkatan Laut (POSAL) representative, added that this activity also highlights the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness. He expressed hope that the program will continue and even expand in the future.
