Strengthening Media Relations, PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Invites Journalists to Visit Sekolah Negeri Terapung (Floating Public School) CSR Program

Kutai Kertanegara – PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) invited several members of the media to visit one of its flagship Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSR) programs, the Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program at SMPN 6 Anggana, located in Sepatin Village, Anggana District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday (October 14, 2025). The visit was part of PHM’s efforts to continue fostering positive, constructive, and transparent communication with stakeholders through direct field observation.

The visit was warmly welcomed by the Head of Sepatin Village, Arianto Juanda, who saw the event as an opportunity to showcase the potential and spirit of Sepatin residents in supporting the Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program at SMPN 6 Anggana. According to Juanda, as he is familiarly called, the school’s presence symbolizes the Company’s genuine concern for equal access to education in remote coastal areas. “The Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program not only gives our children new hope to keep learning despite geographic challenges but also inspires us to keep improving and progressing together,” he said enthusiastically.

In implementing the program, PHM collaborates with the Kutai Kartanegara Regency Government and the East Kalimantan Provincial Education and Culture Office to support equitable access to education in coastal areas affected by tidal fluctuations. The school facilities are built on floating structures, allowing teaching and learning activities to continue safely and comfortably even as environmental conditions change due to rising tides.

Beyond the physical construction of the school, PHM actively contributes to improving teacher capacity, providing educational facilities, and empowering the surrounding community to help sustain the program. To date, the program has directly benefited the community. 101 students have been accepted into universities, coastal graduates have been mentored from 2021 to 2024, literacy initiatives have been strengthened, and three Guru Penggerak (Teacher Leaders) have been supported in Sepatin Village.

Head of Communication, Relations & CID PHM, Achmad Krisna Hadiyanto, explained that the media visit aimed to give journalists first-hand insight into the Company’s CSR programs, thereby improving the quality of information shared with the public. Achmad also stated that the Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program aligns with Pertamina’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the area of quality education.

“At PHM, we implement CID programs in the education sector to support government initiatives to improve educational infrastructure and facilities, strengthen local institutions, and develop human resource capacity around our operating areas in Kalimantan. This program is located in a remote area that is not easily accessible,” he explained.

According to Achmad, the Company believes that education is one of the main foundations for building an independent and knowledgeable society and ensuring a better future for the next generation. “The Sekolah Negeri Terapung Program reflects our belief in addressing the real needs and challenges faced by schools and communities in this area. Through this initiative, we want to show that social innovation like the Sekolah Negeri Terapung is not only a solution to geographic challenges but also a symbol of collaboration and cooperation with many stakeholders,” he added.

Meanwhile, SMPN 6 Anggana Principal Tandarman expressed his appreciation for PHM’s support in advancing education in coastal areas. “Thanks to PHM’s support, teaching and learning activities at our school have improved despite challenging environmental conditions. This program gives new hope to children in Sepatin to keep learning and pursue their dreams,” he said.

Tandarman also noted that PHM’s assistance has enabled SMPN 6 Anggana to earn various national and international awards. “Collaboration among the education sector, the community, and the business world has produced positive and encouraging results for our school. We hope this becomes a source of inspiration for the people of Anggana and nearby areas, showing that the quality of education thrives through consistent cooperation and synergy,” he concluded.

At the end of the visit, PHM invited the journalists to join a mangrove planting activity with representatives from PHM, Pertamina Foundation, and SMPN 6 Anggana students. The initiative represented PHM’s ongoing commitment to delivering tangible and positive contributions to environmental conservation and the well-being of coastal communities.
