Penajam, East Kalimantan – PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur (PHKT) once again held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with stakeholders to discuss upstream oil and gas safety. The event took place on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the Penajam Paser Utara (PPU) Regency Government Hall and featured speakers from the Balikpapan Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP) as well as the Directorate of Vital Object Security (Ditpam Obvit) of East Kalimantan Regional Police.
The FGD was attended by representatives from the Department of Transportation, Department of Fisheries, Department of Environment, Kodim 0913 PPU, PPU Police, Naval Post, and local district and village officials. Representatives from Kilang Pertamina Internasional (RU V Balikpapan), the Association of Speed Boat Entrepreneurs (Gapasdap), and the Speed Boat Motorists Association of PPU Regency were also present.
In his remarks, Dharma Saputra, Head of Communication, Relations & CID of Zona 10, emphasized the importance of this FGD as part of the company’s commitment to safe, secure, and environmentally responsible upstream oil and gas operations. This commitment ensures production sustainability, which plays a vital role in national energy resilience. “Through a collaborative approach and the application of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in our upstream oil and gas operations, PHKT continues to support national energy resilience as outlined in the President’s Asta Cita vision for energy self-sufficiency,” Dharma stated.
He also highlighted the importance of this upstream oil and gas safety campaign as part of the company’s concern for the safety of both the community and the environment surrounding its operational areas. “This FGD’s safety campaign reflects the implementation of Pertamina’s Corporate Life Saving Rules (CLSR), particularly the Line of Fire and Land Transportation elements,” he explained.
According to Dharma, CLSR serves not only as a safety guideline for workers but also as a means of protecting communities near operational areas from potential hazards associated with upstream oil and gas activities.
He expressed appreciation to the speakers and guests for their support, especially the PPU Regency Government for providing the venue. “We also thank the Head of KSOP Balikpapan for inspiring the organization of this FGD, following the community engagement event held during the National Transportation Day commemoration at KSOP Class I Balikpapan on September 11,” Dharma added.
Representing the Head of SKK Migas Kalimantan and Sulawesi Region, Burhanudin from the Operations Department commended PHKT for organizing the event. “Safety is a key factor in PHKT’s operations. The smooth operation of PHKT’s Penajam Supply Base is strongly supported by communication forums like this FGD, which foster a shared culture of safety among stakeholders,” he said.
The activity, involving PHKT’s Southern Operational Area (DOBS), particularly the Penajam Supply Base (PSB), was part of the ongoing upstream oil and gas safety awareness program that has shown positive results. The industry’s Incident Rate (IR) decreased from 0.55 in 2020 to 0.11 in 2024, while workplace accidents also declined compared to 2023.
During the FGD, Ramona Ginting, Superintendent of Operation HSSE Lawe-Lawe Terminal, presented a session on the importance of maintaining discipline in upstream oil and gas operational safety while ensuring the protection of nearby communities. “At PHKT, we apply the best safety practices from both national and global upstream oil and gas industries as the foundation for building a strong safety culture that supports the company’s production sustainability,” she concluded.
