PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia Presents Strategy to Support National Energy Resilience During Working Visit of Commission XII of the House of Representatives in North Kalimantan

Tarakan – PT Pertamina Hulu Indonesia (PHI) received a Specific Working Visit (Kunspek) from Commission XII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI), which oversees the energy, mineral resources, environment, and investment sectors, at the company’s oil and gas operational area in Tarakan City, North Kalimantan, on Wednesday (September 17, 2025). The visit was part of the legislature’s supervisory function to support the achievement of Indonesia’s national oil and gas production targets, 1 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 12 billion standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of natural gas by 2029–2030.

The visit was attended by representatives from the Directorate General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the Provincial Government of North Kalimantan, PHI President Director Sunaryanto, the General Manager of Zona 10, and the company’s management team. During the visit, PHI presented updates on its upstream oil and gas operations, performance, challenges, and areas where government and legislative support are needed. The presentation also included profiles of PHI and its affiliate operating in North Kalimantan, PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tarakan Field. Through this visit, Commission XII was able to gain a firsthand understanding of PHI’s operational conditions and the dynamics of upstream oil and gas activities, particularly at the Tarakan Field.

The Head of the Delegation, Alfons Manibui, highlighted the importance of formulating energy policies with a sustainability focus. “Indonesia is looking toward a cleaner energy future by 2060. The upstream oil and gas subsector must adapt through proper mitigation measures. Commission XII, together with the government, continues to formulate strategic steps, including improving fiscal regulations to encourage a more competitive investment climate,” said Alfons.

The visit also aimed to strengthen stakeholder support, including from the public, local government, and the DPR RI’s strategic partners, for the smooth operation of PEP Tarakan Field. The findings and insights gathered from the visit will serve as valuable input for Commission XII in policy formulation and upcoming discussions.

PHI President Director Sunaryanto outlined several strategies in managing the company’s oil and gas fields, most of which are mature fields, to address operational, technical, financial, and business challenges and maintain production sustainability. These strategies include the “borderless” approach (cross-entity asset optimization), cost efficiency initiatives, maintaining upstream project profitability, and pursuing fiscal incentives. “We believe that maintaining sound project economics, particularly for mature fields, is essential to sustaining upstream oil and gas investment and production, supporting national energy resilience in line with the government’s Asta Cita goal of achieving energy self-sufficiency,” said Sunaryanto.

The working visit reflected strong synergy between the legislature, government, and upstream oil and gas industry in maintaining Indonesia’s energy resilience. PHI, along with its subsidiaries and affiliates in North Kalimantan, remains committed to ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable operations while providing tangible benefits to local communities in its operational areas.

At the end of the visit, Commission XII members toured PHI’s HSSE Demo Room, a facility designed to enhance workers’ understanding and skills related to occupational health and safety.
