PT Pertamina EP Tarakan Field Begins Drilling of SBK Deep-001 Exploration Well to Support National Energy Resilience

Nunukan, North Kalimantan– PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Tarakan Field is set to commence drilling of the Sembakung Deep-001 (SBKD-001) exploration well in Sembakung, Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan. Scheduled to begin on March 14, 2025, this exploration initiative underscores the company's commitment to sustainable investment and energy security.

Tarakan Field Manager Cahyo Tri Mulyanto stated that the company targets drilling one exploration well in 2025 to maintain and enhance oil and gas reserves. "Exploration drilling is a key step in securing additional reserves, essential for ensuring Indonesia's stable and sustainable energy supply," Cahyo explained.

He emphasized that this initiative aligns with national goals to boost oil and gas production by 2030 while ensuring long-term energy availability to support economic growth and sustainable development. "The Sembakung Deep Well (SBKD-001) is expected to contribute to increased oil and gas production while positively impacting the local economy in Sembakung and nearby areas," he added.

Ahead of the drilling activities, the company held a community event on February 27, 2025, featuring prayers and donations to local institutions, including the management of Al Mubarokah Mosque and St. Anthony Padua Church in Nunukan, the Ruhama Orphanage, and the Institute for the Development of Quranic Recitation (LPTQ) in Nunukan and Sembakung.

To ensure the success of this project, PEP Tarakan Field is partnering with PT Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia (PDSI) as the drilling contractor. "Our priority is to carry out this operation safely, efficiently, and effectively while achieving our production targets," Cahyo concluded.

The SubSurface Exploration Area 3 manager, Depi Restiadi, further explained that the SBKD-001 well is planned to reach a depth of 3,007 meters and have an estimated drilling duration of 114 days. "With a projected hydrocarbon resource potential exceeding 50 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE), this well has the potential to unlock new reserves that will contribute to strengthening Indonesia's energy resilience," he stated.
